| When Abigail Thomas’s husband, Rich, was hit by a car, his skull was shattered, his brain severely damaged. Subject to rages, terrors, and hallucinations—and with no memory of what he did the hour, the day, the year before—he was sent to live in a nursing facility that specializes in treating traumatic brain injuries. This tragedy is the ground on which Abigail had to build a new life. How she built that life is a story of great courage and change, of moving to a small country town, of a new family composed of three dogs, knitting, and friendship, of facing down guilt and discovering gratitude. It is also about her relationship with Rich, a man who lived in the eternal present, and the eerie poetry of his often uncanny perceptions. Hailed by Stephen King as Ã’the best memoir I have ever read,Ó this wise, plainspoken, beautiful book enacts the truth Abigail has discovered since the accident: You might not find meaning in disaster, but you might, with effort, make something useful of it. Author: Guest I really liked this book, but as others have said, don't expect it to have much in it about dogs. But just because she has "dogs" in the title, why do we expect it to have this content? Someone can name their book anything they want, I guess we should check it out before we buy it. How much about lambs did we expect in "Silence of the Lambs?"

Author: Guest This wasn't what I was expecting at all. The title and cover photo are a bit misleading - the story didn't really have anything to do with dogs. It was actually a memoir of the author's experience after her husband suffered a traumatic brain injury. It was a heartbreaking story and I appreciated the author's honesty, but it felt a bit disjointed and terse. It was so short and fast-paced that I couldn't really engage much with the story. It was a nice story that gave some insight into traumatic brain injury, and I'm glad I read it, but it just wasn't what I expected.

Author: Guest I picked up this book at the library and enjoyed it so much that I bought a copy. This could be yet another melodramatic fluff about life tragedy but it was a joy! It is sad and pulling in many ways, she has lost so much, but she turns it around and sees life with a new twist. It opens our eyes to all that is true when it seems as though another day is dismal and trying. Abigail Thomas provides humor and tenacity through an extremely difficult time. The comfort of a dog can be the best comfort of all, no judgment and lots of love.

Author: Guest I read hundreds of memoirs and this is my new favorite. I could not put it down and read it in a few hours even though I did not want it to end. I have copied paragraphs from the book that I do not want to forget as the writing is so beautiful. I have not enjoyed a book as much as this one in a long time...I have since ordered her book SAFEKEEPING because I love her writing so much. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

Author: Guest I've read many memoirs this year and this one is the best. Abigail Thomas has every right to deliver a melodramatic, sentimental story of a tragedy. However, she doesn't do that. Being the talented and wise writer that she is, she hands us restraint, delicate simplicity and an exquisite honesty on a beautiful silver platter. I was in the palm of her hand.
