I had the pleasure of seeing AIC on tour with Van Hagar (Halen) in 1991. They blew Van Hagar's door's off! Their shear talent, energy and musicianship were totally inspiring. I went there to see Van Hagar and emerged a lifetime AIC fan. No one has ever better coupled together brooding rock melody with power-chord virtuosity than AIC. Sadly, no one now will. Layne was a one-of-a-kind vocalist, both inspired and tormented by his inner demons and probably, like Cobain before him, hopelessly destined for his ultimate fate. Jerry continues to play and record admirably, but a major piece of him obviously died that fateful day in 2002.

It is disconcerting that there are currently so many AIC-derivative bands making a shameless living off of unconvincingly replicating AIC's sound. Inspiration is one thing; sheer plagerism is quite another. Good luck, Jerry; R.I.P. Layne.

First show for AIC in three years and also the last one ever. This DVD shows everything from these NY recordings, even when they get lumpy (True. the audio cd won't show these mistakes). Anyway, as a fan of AIC, this DVD is a must have for your memories.

Buy this DVD - you will not be disappointed. I watched this session when it was first aired on MTV back in the day; of course it was edited for content and to fit within the hour time frame, so you really didn't get the whole experience. All of the songs (including the Sludge Factory take 1, which is actually pretty funny) are included here - not even the CD has EVERYthing - so it gives the listener/viewer the full experience. Definitely worth the money for a rare glimpse at a true one-of-a-kind band that really carved their own niche from the Seattle scene in the 90's.

If I had my way I would have liked to see more extra stuff on the disc like interviews with Alice members or other bands. Would have been cool, but not necessary to enjoy the hell out of this show.

What you see when you play this DVD is the last show performed by the mighty Alice in Chains, to a select audience way back in the mid-90s following the release of the eponymous album, the one with the three-legged dog on the cover, fondly referred to as Tripod.

I bought the unplugged CD the day it was released in the latter half of 1996 and was already a fan by the time Tripod came out in 1995. It was not the best time to be an AiC fan, though - rumours were rife about the state of the band, Layne Staley's very public drug addiction was center-stage and things were not really looking up. Shortly after this CD came out, another tour was cancelled and the band went on a long hiatus. Staley died in April 2002; I bought this DVD in October of that same year.

I never got to see Alice live; I never will. I cannot help but feel sad and angry and even cheated to a point when I watch the concert - hindsight being 20-20, I guess you can probably see there and then that it is all over. As a fan, it isn't an easy concert to watch. In fact, even the first time I watched it, it wasn't easy.

All that aside, the music is phenomenal. I'm not sure that it all fits the format very well - there are 4 tracks from Tripod on the album, and at least one of them, Sludge Factory, doesn't really work unplugged, in my opinion. I'll admit I was surprised when I heard Alice had done an Unplugged, because a lot of their material is very heavy and layered-up on the albums and the single acoustic guitar wouldn't do any favours unplugged, I thought.

Other heavy tracks make the transition perfectly, though, and are given a fresh look and sound for the show. In particular, Down in a Hole shines out in this format, its usual dirginess (is that a word?) brightened considerably and the trademark vocal harmony of Layne and guitar god Jerry Cantrell soars cleanly over the top. Other favourites include Rooster and Angry Chair (also heavy; working surprisingly well unplugged) from Dirt, as well as the two quieter selections from Sap - Brother and Got me Wrong - which both sound truly inspirational. I challenge anyone to find a better intro to any song on any Unplugged album than the one for Got me Wrong.

For openers, there is crowd-favourite Nutshell, a haunting rendition of this beautiful track, and closing out the set is a new track which never saw daylight, I don't think, called The Killer is Me. There are a couple of others as well making a total of 13 tracks.

Layne is very quiet and withdrawn until he sings, but the bulk of the interaction with the audience comes from Cantrell, who is in fine form cracking jokes and chatting and laughing. I get the impression, though, that Alice as a band is a little wary of the Unplugged format. Their Live album, strung together from shows in the early 90s, captures the essence of Alice a little better, I think.

Still, it was a great show, a magnificent swansong from a band who continued to be relevant throughout its career.
