My daughter just turned 5, knew beginning sounds pretty well but hadn't done much in the way of sounding out words or truly trying to start to read. This did it. Since there are short words and few words to a page, she can truly read it and it has built such confidence that it is worth its weight in gold as far as generating excitement about reading.

The great thing about Bob Books is that my 4-year-old daughter is sounding out all of the words and is very proud of herself for reading a whole book all by herself. The only thing that I was a little disappointed about was that the books are small and paperback. It was neat, though, that a little finger-puppet theater was included inside the set of 12 books. We are having fun with that, too.

Only God knows how much money and time I have wasted buying other phonic books until I found this Bob Books series.
Unlike other phonic books, Bob books are only composed of the most simple sentences ( mostly 3-5 words ) focusing on the particular phonic words. 99% of the times, my 6 y/o son is able to read the whole entire book ( granted only 12 very short pages) by himself without any of my help. Problem with the many other phonic books has been that except for the particular phonic word, they have so much complex words in the sentence that my son was able to read only 1-2 words out of this long sentence ( example; She bakes the cakes with white flour and chocolate chips. ). With the Bob Books, my son is absolutely proud that he read the whole thing and wants to read more. Definitely a confidence builder!!
Illustration of Bob Books are also simple and very amusing. Even I enjoy reading this book with my son.
This book series definitely get my strongest recommendation for any kids learning to read!!

This series of books has taught my 5 year old daughter to read! They are short "books", typically based on 3 or less new sounds. The sounds are introduced with pictures at the beginning of each book, then all words in the book contain only those sounds. Sound odd? Think... Mat sat. Dog sat. Dog sat on Mat. Basic, and so rewarding to the kids when they read! Each book builds on the previous, with plenty of practice built in, not just one new sound after another.
I tried using these from the library, didn't work. They need to be returned too quickly, one series of these books may easily take a month or more to get through, depending on your child's rediness, retention, and desire to tackle reading.
