The Blackening

Description

Product Description
On its fifth album, Static X mines its familiar Prong-meets-Ministry sound to convincing effect over the course of twelve tracks of industrial metal darkness. Because the band's name alone makes comparisons to the likes of White Zombie, Korn, and Slipknot redundant, it's instead worth noting that Cannibal is arguably the group's leanest, most direct-sounding, and most metal album to date. And, if this album is a harbinger of the outfit's future ventures, then listeners are in for a eye-popping ride. Wayne Static and his cohorts are perhaps most effective on the stomping "Cuts You Up," the dark and discoesque "Behemoth," and the grand executioner of them all, "Destroyer." Still, the record suffers a bit for its intentions of brutality. The hit-and-run approach of Static's songwriting means that none of the tracks reach the four-minute mark and thus come off as vignettes rather than fully realized narratives. All in all, Cannibal may be the album that detractors and fans alike have been waiting for, the one that proves that Static means to take us on a longer and more interesting journey than we could have ever imagined. --Jedd Beaudoin

I've listened to Static X for several years now and I can say this CD is absolutely horrible. Every song is almost identical in the way it sounds. There is no songs that mix tempo or anything. They only difference between songs is the word that they yell for the chorus. It's almost like they're not even trying anymore. For anyone expecting more of a Machine or Wisconsin Death Trip sort of CD I would definitely stay away.

as a static x fan ive been waiting for them to record a new disc.im very pleased with this disc!it remains as simple minded groove metal to me.nothing too complex but great grooves!the vocals are pretty heavy & angry.the drum & bass grooves are locked in.the guitar leads are a great change for static x & the leads are actually quite killer!

my dislikes about this disc are little.#1.most songs are too short to have any REAL substance.#2.the songs words are few & dont make much sense to me.#3.i dont think the mix on the disc is all that great.

if you dig static x than by all means buy this disc!!!

I was there when stat made its grand entrance with Wisconsin Death Trip, An impressive ground breaking CD that put a great band on the map. Now does that mean i wanna hear that cd over and over again.... No. A bands progression musically should be different from album to album, this bands progression for me was disappointing but still decent. Machine was good, Shadow Zone i personally felt was a little to sell outish, but had some decent tracks, Start a War was an effort to make up for Shadow Zone, Unfortunately still not quite hitting the button, but overall a good cd. Now here we are to Cannibal, wow, just when i thought that Static - X might be done, they deliver one of the best albums of the year. With the intensity of Death Trip, The Structure of Machine, and the creativity of Shadow Zone, and Start a War, This is by far the best album they have ever produced. Heavy, Catchy, even the solos are a welcome addition, I applaud this band for making an awesome, awesome CD!!!

I'm pretty much a Static-X zealot, and this album will see heavy rotation with the rest of my Static-X collection. Unfortunately, in one word, Cannibal is GENERIC. While it is very listenable, it is a pretty mediocre effort from a band from whom I've come to expect great albums. I can't chose a favorite album out of the first 3, nor can I chose a favorite song from any of those albums. The thing stands out from WDT, Machine, and Shadow Zone is that they all have GREAT flow from the first song to the last. All the songs sound like they were meant to be on that album in the exact order Static-X placed them. Start a War was a good album that I like overall, but it lost the flow of the first 3, and I definitely have a favorite song from that album, "Just In Case", which is sad to me.

Back to Cannibal, I've listened to the entire album five times now since I received it last Friday, and all the tracks are worth listening too, which is a good thing. However, I can't recommend this album to Static-X newcomers as it is not representative of the Static-X sound. It sounds like a producer told them they were missing energy so they "amped" up the heavy sound and in the process joined the masses of mediocre heavy bands, forgetting that they are Static-X the band which defies labels. I've enjoyed how each of the first 4 Static-X albums had a separate sound while retaining the Static-X sound. Sadly Cannibal is a departure from that.

Static-X is a band that most Rock & Metal fans know. They have a good deal of fans world wide & show no sign of being disloyal. That said I must admit I myself am a fan of the band, My favorite album being Machine with Shadow Zone at a close second due to the originality. Cannibal is a well rounded album but leaves me wondering where Static-X's well known 'Industrial' appeal has gone. Machine was a fine mixture of fast to mid paced metal tunes combined with gritty industrial over tones. Cannibal is basically Machine stylus minus the Industrial side. Fast, Catchy & Fun but just sounds like i've heard these tracks before. "Destroyer" would easily be my favorite song bearing the most brutal aspect of the hard, fast, and raw sound heard on Cannibal. New Static-X fans should pick up either Wisconsin Death Trip or Machine before purchasing this.
