Description

Product Description
Gorgeous to listen to and gorgeous to look at, Celtic Woman is perfect PBS fare, sort of a Riverdance without the dancing. Drawing on the same New Age-y sound and propulsive energy as that show's solo-voice and choral numbers, the live concert features four attractive young women in strapless evening gowns with soaring voices backed by an orchestra, an Anuna-like chorus, and a large percussion section. The more traditional fare includes Méav Ni Mhaolchatha's "Danny Boy" and "She Moved Through the Fair," and Chloë Agnew's "Ave Maria" (the Bach-Gounod version). Movie and TV selections range from Agnew's "Walking in the Air" (The Snowman) and "Someday" (Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame) to Lisa Kelly's "May It Be" (the Enya song from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the King) and Órla Fallon's voice and harp rendition of "Harry's Game." A fifth woman, Máiréad Nesbitt, adds some variety by fiddling "The Butterfly" and "Ashokan Farewell" (best known as the theme from Ken Burns's The Civil War). Occasionally the singers join together, as in Enya's "Orinoco Flow," an a cappella rendition of West Side Story's "Somewhere," music director David Downes's composition "One World," and a stately version of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Celtic Woman was created by Downes (like many of the other performers, a Riverdance veteran) along with Sharon Browne and Dave Kavanagh of the Celtic Collections record label. --David Horiuchi

The title for this says it all! I wasn't looking to do a professional analysis of this dvd, but just kick back and see/hear how it was. How was it? Beautiful and all three women could sing very well. The violinist was also appreciated as well as the rest of the musicians. I don't particularly care if I sound stupid and trite, but it was sweet "music to my ears".

Other reviewers have pretty much covered technical side. What I don't get is those negative reviews complaining of lack of movements or action...This DVD is of music and sound...it wasn't about movement...comparing it to Riverdance is comparing apples and oranges. Yet, without provocative movements, this DVD grabs your soul with sound and visual...

One night, my 2 year old daughter was restless and could not sleep. She was very moody and my wife just gave up on trying to put her to sleep. I brought her downstairs and turned on this piece and right away, she couldn't take her eyes off of it. Her comments while watching it were "Pretty" "Wow" "What is she doing?" "People like it" "I like it" ...

This 2 year old girl who could not watch Disney DVD in one sitting sat through the whole thing fighting sleep to catch it all...By the end, she was calmed enough to be put to bed without struggle lol...

Her last words before going to sleep? "I wanna play violin"

This is the reaction from a 2 year old who does not know technical jargons or biase...she was moved purely due to sound and visual as I was...

This music...tickles something very deep inside you...it's just beautiful...what other words are necessary?

BTW, I think it'd be a great way to introduce your young'ns to instrumental music...as each instruments are highlighted during the performance kids get to see what's making those beautiful and unique sounds, how it's played while being immersed in __________ ..someone else feel the blank...I'm at a loss for words...

The DVD is awesome, especially the interviews with the ladies. The only complaint I have is that it took a long time to ship.

I saw this show on PBS and was totally blown away by the purity of the ladies voices. Loved the selection of songs chosen for them to sing. If you like a wide range of music you will certainly like this CD. My personal favorite was You Raise Me Up.

If you like Neo-Celtic music like Riverdance, then this is a must see.. While i prefer traditional celtic music, this was a good concert. It had a pleasant mix of Celtic and Orchestral New Age music. With a little bit of Choir thrown in for good measure. The choral group "Anuna" back's up a few of the singer for this. If you like this style of music, then i would recommend buying this.
