| In this age of do-it-yourself health care (heck, if the doctor only sees you for 10 minutes each visit, what other options are there?), Change Your Brain, Change Your Life fits in perfectly. Filled with "brain prescriptions" (among them cognitive exercises and nutritional advice) that are geared toward readers who've experienced anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, excessive anger or worry, and obsessive behavior, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life milks the mind-body connection for all it's worth. Written by a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has also authored a book on attention deficit disorder, Change Your Brain contains dozens of brain scans of patients with various neurological problems, from caffeine, nicotine, and heroin addiction to manic-depression to epilepsy. These scans, often showing large gaps in neurological activity or areas of extreme overactivity, are downright frightening to look at, and Dr. Amen should know better than to resort to such scare tactics. But he should also be commended for advocating natural remedies, including deep breathing, guided imagery, meditation, self-hypnosis, and biofeedback for treating disorders that are so frequently dealt with by prescription only. Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Contact us if you are one of them, and wish to change the above description. |

Author: Guest This book is very informative on how our brains work and the causes for some mental illnesses. Dr. Amen uses SPECT studies, a kind of brain x-ray, that measures the activity levels in the brain. If you have difficulties with certain behaviors or attitudes, or if you've tried therapy and/or medication, but it's not working, you should read this book. It may be that your brain has an underlying physical/chemical problem that can be easily helped with the correct medication and therapy. Good suggestions on how to manage depression, ADD, violence, and addictions, as well as other forms of mental illness.

Author: Guest I cannot recommend this book. Keep in mind,I sometimes wear fake suede and artificial silk-at least these things have an advantage over the real thing in that they are cheap and washable.Sometimes they even look fairly good. The pseudo science in this book overs no advantages over the real thing .Admittedly, it almost says something of some value every 4rth page or so, but I still cannot recommend it.

Author: Guest This book is astounding and written so that any lay person can understand it. I'm showing it to all my family and friends who are therapists, healers, chiropractors, and to those who are bi-polar and ADD. I've bought extra copies to pass around and to give as presents. Wonderful book.

Author: Guest Dr. Amen offers some interesting new ideas on the etiology of treatment of emotional disorders but his perspective is rather imbalanced in favor of the medical model of psychiatry. He seems to suggest that "chanding your brain" is rather simple and non-invasive, but then much of his treatment involves taking numerous medications. He lacks both an understanding of developmental and family systems theory. For example, he suggests that adolescents should simply not worry about what their peers think, failing to realize that this a developmental process. Regarding family therapy, he claims that their was no obvious mental illness in his nephew's family to explain his nephew's difficulties, but then later in the book he discusses that some of his family members (including himself if I remember difficulty) had rather significant emotional difficulties. In summary, he presents a rather linear, simplistic understanding of psychological functioning.

Author: Guest Amazon referred me to Dr. Amen's work as I was seeking resources for a colleague whose parent may be in early stages of Alzheimer's. Dr. Amen's work is amazing, bringing psychotherapy to a new level of science as practitioners may now see the organ they are treating and prescribe more accurately. For a sample of Dr. Amen's work in neuropsychiatry, visit his homepage, www.brainplace.com As 2005 begins, the website offers an 18 minute video overview (Windows Media Player required).
Multimedia is especially helpful since it engages more comprehensively and introduces information accessible to those who spend an hour trying to read a page or two. For more resources, go to www.mindworkspress.com which offers DVDs on ADD, Anxiety and Depression, Drug & Alcohol Abuse (Which Brain Do You Want?), New Skills for Frazzled Parents, and Alzheimer's. The DVD version of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life presents an overview of the principles and displays before-and-after scans from his clinics (as of this writing there are four). There are books written on ADD an Intimacy, books for children, teens, and siblings. "Change Your Brain..." is the first step in understanding and optimizing your brain, "the hardware of your soul."
