| Paper or plastic? Neither, say William McDonough and Michael Braungart. Why settle for the least harmful alternative when we could have something that is better--say, edible grocery bags! In Cradle to Cradle, the authors present a manifesto calling for a new industrial revolution, one that would render both traditional manufacturing and traditional environmentalism obsolete. Recycling, for instance, is actually "downcycling," creating hybrids of biological and technical "nutrients" which are then unrecoverable and unusable. The authors, an architect and a chemist, want to eliminate the concept of waste altogether, while preserving commerce and allowing for human nature. They offer several compelling examples of corporations that are not just doing less harm--they're actually doing some good for the environment and their neighborhoods, and making more money in the process. Cradle to Cradle is a refreshing change from the intractable environmental conflicts that dominate headlines. It's a handbook for 21st-century innovation and should be required reading for business hotshots and environmental activists. --Therese Littleton Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Author: Guest I am trying my best to live 'green', and not doing a very great job of it. So often the tasks of saving our planet seem so large - how can I make a difference? It becomes overwhelming and even depressing to me.
Welcome Cradle to Cradle, a book that offers a base line philosophical change in how we look at things - Shift from our current "Cradle to Grave" paradigm where products are designed without any thought about their afterlife, but with the intent to bury post-consumer, to "Cradle To Cradle", products are designed not only with their consumer life/function in mind, but also equally with their death (and reincarnation... post-consumer life) in mind.
I found little in this text to offer tangible ways for an individual to make huge changes. In fact, while I was reading this book I even felt myself get discouraged about the lack of "Here's What You Could Be Doing..." But now that I'm several weeks away from the book, I am beginning to realize how the core of my world-view HAS truly changed.
Little by little, having profoundly shifted my perspective on living in harmony with the earth, I'm discovering ways to convert my world from one in which being 'green' is a conscious struggle into one where green is simply the way things are.
I am truly thankful to the authors for presenting the world with some of the most compelling Eco-inspiration I have read.

Author: Guest Every responsible citizen in our country should read this book. First of all, this book is not about politics. This is not about red states or blue states. This is not about liberals and conservatives. Whether you agree with McDonough and Braungart may be open to debate (although personally I am not sure how you can disagree with building a better and safer world). The key is for each of us to put aside preconceived ideas and prejudices and really open our minds to important discussions like this that are going to shape our world. If you believe that the future is all about our kids, then this is a must read.

Author: Guest A must read for any designer that cares about the environment. A new way of thinking about our consumer culture. McDonough is on the leading edge of "green design". The book is a good mix of science and design, but don't expect glamorous photos of architecture. This book has become a good conversation starter in our office as there are no concrete answers, mostly concepts. A major plus is that you can read it in the bath as its made of truly recyclable waterproof paper..

Author: Guest William McDonough provides both the impetus to want to change the world and practical ways to make it happen. The book is very accessible to readers of all levels, and the pages of the book itself are a wonder...made of recyclable, non-polluting plastics that feel very much like paper. McDonough's stories will make the reader think twice about whether each item that we purchase is healthy for you and whether it can be considered compost or pollution when it eventually gets discarded.
