Who's in charge? Today children are consulted about their preferences on vacations and restaurant choices (and given the power to veto the choices). Children today are driven to countless lessons and sporting events, released from responsibility for even minimal household chores and lavishly praised simply for being children. Children do not simply wake up one morning and decide they will be in charge; this process normally occurs over a period of time. This power has been freely given to them by adults with good intentions. For this generation, parents have been told to follow their child's lead on everything from potty training to showing their unique expression. The issue of how to provide appropriate and adequate parenting and discipline is of great interest to each of us. Parents want well-behaved children. They want children to grow up to be contended, productive, responsible and self-disciplined. Some behaviors are particularly challenging. Noncompliance and aggressive behavior can bring out the worst in parents. Neither extremes of severe punishments nor limitless freedom will lead to long-term behavior change. As parents, we need to understand that our children's behavior is often a reflection of our own behavior.
