As the legal controversy continues--this newly revised and updated third edition of the landmark bestseller contains new, critically important information for patients, loved ones, and medical personnel.
The original publication of Final Exit stunned the nation by offering people with terminal illness a choice on how--and when--to end their suffering. It helped thousands by giving clear instructions to doctors, nurses, and families on how to handle a patient’s request for euthanasia.
In the wake of court cases and legislative mandates, this revised and updated third edition goes far beyond the original to provide new information about the legality of euthanasia and assisted suicide, and a thoughtful examination of the personal issues involved. It has become the essential source to help loved ones and supportive doctors remain within existing laws and keep a person’s dying intimate, private, and dignified.
With deep compassion and sensitivity, it spells out why a living will may not be sufficient to have a person’s wishes carried out--and what document is a better alternative. It updates where to get proper drugs and exactly how to carry out the quickest, most peaceful way to make a final exit. Finally, it gently talks to a person considering self-deliverance about alternatives, planning, and the means to make every death a "good death" at our time of greatest need.Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Author: Guest I don't know if the 3d edition is different from the one in my possession. All I know is that Derek Humphrey published an exercept from one of my articles WITHOUT ASKING FOR MY PERMISSION (page 130 and not 129 as indicated in the index). Soon after, my phone began to ring. The callers ? Desperate people in search of a local Jack Kevorkian Franchise.
I do believe in the right to die but, without my participation.
The "Final Exit" blurb is:"Euthanasia/Right To Die/Medical Ethics.
How about PUBLISHING ETHICS ?

Author: Guest I found this book to be incredibly informative. Watching my parents in the throes of death has made me vow to not do this to my children. Any ideas I had prior to reading this book were dispelled and I'm grateful to know what doesn't work! The book is not for the weak at heart - especially the illustrations but I've already connected with a partner and hope, that when the time comes, I'll have the fortitude to carry through.

Author: Guest For the purposes for which people read this book, it is excellent. Thorough, readable , and humane. One of the few books I want to own AFTER having read it.

Author: Guest While most readers who seek out this book will probably be disappointed that the author can't definitively provide a simple, dignified, and foolproof way of ending one's life, we still need to be grateful that this book offers us the best possibilites that society currently allows. Religious zealots and others who think they have the right to make decisions for everyone else still limit our choices and condemn free people to pointless suffering. For anyone who feels that this decision belongs to oneself alone, the author does his best to provide the available answers.

Author: Guest I appreciated the various perspectives given by the other reviewers, and I know that someone intent on suicide will eventually find a way. I understand the purpose of the book and have read it twice trying to gain a connection with my precious sister who used the book for her suicide. She put a plastic bag over her head and the autopsy showed only a trace amount of Benedryl. A copy of Final Exit was laying nearby. She was depressed but had much life to live. She was still wonderfully vibrant in many areas of her life.
I cannot put into this limited space all my thoughts regarding this complex issue, and prefer to say nothing, but when I read the Reviewer: Booklover "wrytermom" (SoCal, United States) - I started to cry because I also lost my beautiful sister. Someone closest to her forced her to read the book and kept referring to the book after she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. She was 46 yrs young and very beautiful; so creative, talented, intelligent, but controlled by someone she loved. I understand what the other reviewers were saying, as they put much thought and effort into articulating their reviews- and I agree with a lot of what they are saying - are but I want to thank "wrytermom" for being bold enough to share your unimaginable and inhuman pain for which there is no answer.
