Mind over Back Pain: A Radically New Approach to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Back Pain

Description

Product Description
Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) --Joan Price

I must say in response to Joan Price's comments above, namely that Healing Back Pain 'isn't really a program for self-treatment with only 5 pages of action plans' - she is incorrect.

I read this book at the urging of a friend who recovered from years of debilitating back pain.

After reading it once (about a 2-3 hour investment of time), I began 'discipling my mind' and working hard to apply the 'mere 5 pages' of action plans. Why do we as humans think everything must be hard? =)

As I read the book, I began applying the principles and found my pain subsiding.

Within just one week, I was relieved of pain that I had borne for 5-10 years, and was able to stop going to doctors and treatments that had done nothing. And I spent many thousands of dollars on treatments.

It is a credit to John Sarno that he has shared simple and straightforward direction so we can actually use it.

Complexity is not the measure of something's value. Results are.

And I am living a different life because of simply reading and applying the thoughts in this book.

Thank you Dr. Sarno!

This book might be worth considering for anyone who has some kind of a back problem (every third of us?). However, I have an issue with the title of the book as I find it over-promising and misleading. When buying the book one would expect to find solutions for his or her back pain ("Healing Back Pain" is the title!!!) However the book concentrates on only one kind of a back pain, namely one resulting from our suppressing of our feelings and emotions. I am not debating whether Dr. Sarno is right or wrong in his theory, but I am really disappointed in not finding any solution (healing) to a real back problem...

As alternative reading I rather suggest "Can We Live 150 Year?" where the author devotes a whole chapter to spine problems and resulting from them diseases. But before you buy this book, better check Amazon's "Search Inside the Book" feature to make sure that you are buying what you really want.

"Not me"! These were the first words that came to my mind when I learned about Dr. Sarno's approach.

How was it possible? Here I was suffering from back and neck pain, sciatica in both legs, tendonitis in knees and elbows, pain and numbness in both hands, and complete disability. Could this all be caused by tension?

I am a scientific-minded and skeptical person who keeps an open mind when presented with a new idea. So I decided to look into this approach and realized that it answered all my questions about my condition. This new understanding helped me to improve immediately and recover within a few days. I know that it helps to talk to others who studied Dr. Sarno's approach. You may discuss your concerns and questions with other readers from around the world by visiting rapidrecovery. net and joining the readers' forum. You can simply read the comments and/or share your thoughts and concerns with other readers. I hope this will be an additional tool to help you recover and live pain free.

When I was 25, I suffered such severe back pain that after trying all the usual things (physical therapy, cortisone shots, TENS units, chiropractors, etc.), I convinced my orthopedic doctor to perform a spinal fusion. Less than 2 years later, the pain returned and I was faced with a second surgery. As I was contemplating this 2nd surgery and on massive doses of pain killers daily, I stumbled upon Dr. Sarno and his book "Healing Back Pain." I read this book and within 30 days, I was off my pain killers completely and living pain free. That was over 13 years ago and I haven't taken a single pain killer since, not even ibuprofen. Since then, my back pain has returned periodically but I have managed it with stress reduction, exercise/yoga and dealing with my emotions, as Dr. Sarno suggests. Within days, my back pain disappears and I resume my routine and my life. A few years ago, I experienced pain in both my wrists, leaving me to question whether or not I had carpel tunnel syndrome. Despite many, many suggestions that I see a doctor for my CTS, I again bucked modern medicine and followed Dr. Sarno's theories and suggestions. And, voila! my wrist pain disappeared and hasn't returned since. I swear by Dr. Sarno, his theories and his cures. After all, all I need to do is look in the mirror to see proof that they work. Simply invest fully in Dr. Sarno theories and solutions, and you WILL be cured.

For nearly 20 years I could count on being completely debiliated by lower back pain at least once a year, usually missing out on weeks of work. In between these severe spasm attacks I would suffer from low-level back pain and stiffness much of the time. I tried special desk chairs, exercises, drugs and bed rest to no avail. Surgery was looming. A confirmed cynic, I don't typically have revelationary experiences. Things don't "change my life" forever...until now. I read the book five years ago and have literally been pain free ever since. When I feel a twinge coming on I do a couple of Dr. Sarno's counterintuitive exercises and all is well. I can't say why or how but, for the first time, I can say that this book, and Dr. Sarno's philosophy, changed my life forever.
