Product Description
If the end of Friends left a hole in your life, take a look at How I Met Your Mother. Quirky young urban folk grappling with life and love--check. Charming, good-looking actors who aren't afraid of looking like idiots for the sake of a good joke--check. Crisp, solid writing that sticks comfortably within the sitcom format, but is fresh enough to nudge the show into surprising and inventive moments--check. In fact, the creators of How I Met Your Mother should be embarrassed by how close they hew to the Friends formula--except that they do it so well. Let's face it, Friends didn't invent this territory (tales of twentysomething life), they just refined it. How I Met Your Mother quickly cultivates its own flavor: A little more openly romantic than most sitcoms, willing to let a scene take a quiet or off-kilter turn, trusting that not every viewer has to get every joke.

The hub of the likable cast is Josh Radnor, who keeps Ted (a single guy ready to settle down) from being annoying, despite his neuroses and perfectionism. Cobie Smulders gives Robin (the girl Ted thinks might be the one, but who doesn't want to settle down) enough goofy, tomboyish charm that she feels like a person and not an idealized love interest. Jason Segel (Freaks and Geeks) and Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, American Pie), plays Ted's soon-to-be-married best friends Marshall and Lily with enough lingering doubt in their engaged happiness to keep them from becoming too comfortable. And rounding out the cast is Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser, M.D.), shedding his good-guy image as Barney, a crass, lecherous cad who, nonetheless, comes through for his friends. Episode plots are pretty straightforward (Ted signs up with matchmaking agency; Marshall takes a well-paying job he doesn't like; when Ted gets a girlfriend, Robin realizes she has feelings for him after all; and Lily has second thoughts about getting married), but the show maintains a nice balance of single-episodes stories and a season-long arc--and as you grown attached to the characters, even fairly routine stories are made to feel fresh. This is good comfort television: Smart but not snotty, earnest but not cloying, oddball without being forced or wacky. Check it out. --Bret Fetzer

I recently discovered this series on the CBS website (now in Season 2) and was instantly hooked. I went ahead and purchased the Season 1 DVD and it's made me laugh out loud...REPEATEDLY. I knew Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan and Neil Patrick Harris in other roles and LOVE them in the sit-com; they have great timing and delivery. Josh Radnor and Cobie Smulders were new to me but instantly likeable as well. The whole cast has such great chemistry together and I love that the characters of Lily and Marshall (Lilypad and Marshmallow) have a healthy, loving, fun and playful relationship. It's possible to have a happy couple be interesting. (I'm looking at you Grey's Anatomy--the whole Gizzie thing may be the final straw for me with this show. But I digress...)

I haven't even gotten to the Special Features yet, but the 22 episodes alone make this DVD worth every penny and then some. If you don't get the "high 5", "suit up" references in these reviews , see what all the fuss is about! :-)

An excellent comedy series. I would never have thought that a plot which is based on the totally unrealistic and false assumption that teenage children can patentiently sit around to hear from their father telling them with every detail (for tens of hours) how he met their mother, can be so good and hilarious. Both the write up and the extremely good chemistry between the actors make for a fantastic and very enjoyable comedy series. Not to be missed. If you have enjoyed sitcoms like "Friends' or "Two guys and a girl" you will simply love this one. I can't wait for the second series to be released on DVD.

This show is so incredibly funny I can't believe I didn't watch it from the beginning! I just happened to catch it on tv during season two and loved it so much that I asked (and got!) season one for Christmas. Now I have watched the entire season one about ten times in three months. I loved Friends, but I hate to say this show is funnier. The humor is a little more intelligent and the people are genuinely loveable. I don't want to give away any plot but some of my favorite episodes are the new year's eve one, ok? awesome!, the [...] pumpkin.....actually I love them all. The show can be serious without you sitting there saying come on already and it's so unpredictable. Season two is great too and I can't wait for it to come out on DVD!!
