| Just as A Bug's Life was a computer-animated comedy inspired by Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai, the funny and often enthralling Ice Age is a digital re-imagining of the Western Three Godfathers. The heroes of this unofficial remake (set 20,000 years ago, during the titular Paleolithic era) are a taciturn mastodon named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano), an annoying sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), and a duplicitous saber-toothed tiger, Diego (Denis Leary). The unlikely team encounters a dying, human mother who relinquishes her chirpy toddler to the care of these critters. Hoping, against all odds, to return the little guy to his migrating tribe, Manfred and his associates need to establish trust among themselves, not an easy thing in a harsh world of predators, prey, and pushy glaciers. Audiences that have become accustomed to the rounded, polished, storybook look of Pixar's house brand of computer animation (Monsters, Inc.) will find the blunt edges and chilly brilliance of Ice Age--evoking the harsh, dangerous environment of a frozen world--a wholly different, and equally pleasing, trip. Recommended for ages 4 and up. --Tom Keogh Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Author: Guest received such high marks. As compared to many other of the animated films I have seen (Shrek, Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles), I found the characters in this movie to be less than compelling and frankly, the execution of what had the makings of a great storyline was a bit lame. Yes, there were a few chuckle moments, but that was it.
The premise of the movie is simple. 3 different animals (Depressed, sardonic Mastadon, airheaded Sloth, vicious Sabre Toothed Tiger) rescue a baby whose mother has just died. The dimwitted Sloth insists that the baby be returned to its tribe. Initially, the Sabre Toothed Tiger (voiced convincingly by Dennis Leary) is on a mission to steal the baby and return it to his pride so they may eat it alive - its father killed several of the Sabre Toothed Tiger Tribe. Leading the Mastadon and the Sloth into a trap, the Sabre Toothed Tiger is eventually won over by the friendship and trust that develops as they try to outrun the ever advancing Ice Age while defending the baby from a host of threats. At the last moment, the Sabre Toothed Tiger breaks down and tells the Sloth and the Mastadon that they are about to be devoured by the pride and they escape to safely deliver the baby to its grateful father. The premise holds so much promise, but the movie simply did not deliver.
I will say this. If you own a nice TV and a fantastic sound system (I have a plasma and an AWESOME Paradigm Surround System), there are WOW moments in the movie. The opening scene contains extended "ice cracking" (think glaciers breaking apart) and is awesome when viewed over a proper system. There's just not enough of the WOW technology moments to make up for a very average script.
I also found the THX Calibration Feature to be helpful. Basically, it runs you through a series of tests to ensure that your system is at an optimal setting.
Is this movie a standard bearer for animated films? No. But if you're an animated film lover, it's a decent way to spend an evening.

Author: Guest "ICE AGE" IN A NUTSHELL:
Cute Story & Characters we can care about! 4.5 Stars!
WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT:
I have been a bit let down by the usual story content of the big budget animated offerings of late, most of which don't seem to be keeping up with the soaring technology that showcases these stories. "Ice-Age" is an exception as it is concise and interesting and is over so fast I found myself wishing it would just go on a while longer. While the technology is impressive as seen in the remarkable fire, moving water and smoke filled scenes, the technology is used sparingly which is good, as it gives the story a chance to shine, and it does. In addition to a neat and clever story the voices of the characters fit and the plot really books, avoiding getting bogged in songs that don't further the plot [like some of Don Bluth's epics].I have not yet seen the special DVD features, but I did watch the film twice on our first showing on DVD. This film compares very well to the Lion King but has less music and a faster cleaner plot. 4.5 Stars! Ice Age 2 anyone?

Author: Guest Ice Age is absolutely one of the most wonderful animated movies ever.A classic the moment it was released in theaters.I watch it with my little niece whom never gets tired of it,it's one of her all time favorite. She loves all of the characters,Manny the wooly Mammoth, the Baby, and especially Sid the Sloth who makes her laugh so much [except those mean tigers, she always says],but she made an exception for Diego the Sabertooth Tiger when he saved them from the mean ones.I have no doubt Ice Age has the same effect on kids all around the world. The 2-DISC SPECIAL EDITION has excellent picture and sound quality and is definitely worth collecting,so get it for your children and/or yourself.

Author: Guest This is a great movie that you and your family will enjoy over and over. When Sid the Sloth's family migrates without him,he befriends a mammoth, Manny. Manny is annoyed with Sid, and after he saves Sid's life, he just can't seem to get rid of him!!
Then they find a baby lying next to the water, Sid takes compassion and decides to find the baby's "pack" with Manny's help of course! Manny wants nothing to do with the pathetic little beast, until Diego the Saber tooth shows up innnocently trying to take the baby. Really the baby is the son of the leader of the humans. And the sabers swore to get his son for his pack after the humans wiped out alot of their pack. And speaking of "packed" this movie is packed with fun, adventure, humor, and just plain fun! Their has to be room under the tree for this gift!!!
