When Jane saves Rochester from an eerie fire, she begins to suspect that there are many mysteries behind the walls of Thornfield Hall. Author: Guest This is by far the best adaptation of the book and has not been afraid to focus the story totally on the two lovers. I'm sure traditionalists will be unhappy with that but I'm as pleased as punch.
Its given Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson the opportunity of a lifetime to bring to life a Rochester and Jane we really care about. I'm at the end of my seat waiting for tomorrow's final instrument and I'm not alone.
Its definitely a case of move over Colin Firth and hello Toby Stephens. He's made me fall in love with the character of Rochester and I have to admit I've rather fallen for the delectable Toby too. I particularly like the humor he's brought to the role and vulnerability. He certainly looks good in a pair of breeches and boots. His on screen chemistry with Ruth has been a delight to watch. I wish I could watch them together for many more weeks.
The series and 2 leads deserve a BAFTA and international Emmy.

Author: Guest My #1 favorite JANE EYRE production has always been the Dalton version - for me, no one was better as Rochester than Dalton and I haven't changed my mind on that. I also love the Orson Welles and George C. Scott versions. The most horrible version of all is the one with William Hurt -- a case of very bad casting! As much as I love Ciaran Hinds, that version was just plain awful -- all he did was run around and yell at the top of his lungs. I have always loved Toby Stephens in everything he's done but I was very doubtful of him as Rochester and doubtful of yet another version of one of my favorite novels. It's been done so many times and after the disappointment with the Ciaran Hinds/Samantha Morton version just a few years ago, I had no hopes at all. Boy was I surprised! It's not perfect and Stephens doesn't knock Dalton from his pedestal but he's a terrific #2 -- this was very good entertainment. Lovely music and Stephens is very compelling. Ruth Wilson is ok - she grows on you as the story progresses. And there were some fascinating little differences - the flashback scene to Jamaica and Bertha's room being a little less dungeon-like, and the nice little ending. I know the "sexing up" of the novel won't go down well with purists (the way the 1995 Colin Firth version of Pride & Prejudice appalled purists) but who cares? I loved the racy scenes with Rochester and Jane - Stephens just made it deliciously steamy. I laughed and cried at this version and will certainly buy it.

Author: Guest I have watched several other versions of "Jane Eyre" and enjoyed each one. This version however, in my opinion, accomplished what none other has as successfully as this one. I was completely emersed in each and every character from start to conclusion of this movie. Ruth Wilson's portrayal of "Jane" was flawless, she amazed me with the depth and complexity of her character. I felt the heaviness of her rejection, struggles and abuse as a child. I stood amazed by her growth into a woman of grace and honor, with no trace of self pity. Ruth Wilson's performance was surely a gift to me. I found the chemistry between Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens to be powerful. There was not one false emotion on the part of the characters nor moment in which the story line did not flow. This version is a project of beauty which feeds the mind, soul and spirit. If the marker of an extradinary film is it's power to move and affect it's audience, then this version is certainly five-star!

Author: Guest According to many sources on the internet the US DVD does not have the Special Features that the UK version has. For some reason they are distributing the DVD with all of the Special Features later in May. The US DVD reportedly only has cast filmographies and a biography of Charlotte Bronte. The UK version includes those and deleted scenes, outtakes, audio commentaries, interviews with cast & crew, and a photo gallery.
If all the extras aren't important to you by all means go ahead and order this beautifully done adaption of Jane Eyre. Of course these sources could be untrue but I'd rather wait to find out then to go and buy another copy of it in May.

Author: Guest I had only seen one other Jane Eyre (the George C. Scott and Susannah York version of the early 1970's), and I had read the book many years ago. After the first episode of this one, I began reading the book again and looked forward all week to the second installment. To all those saying it doesn't follow the book, I think it sticks quite well to the plot, and in only four hours time it would be impossible to include every long speech that the characters make. I thought the acting and chemistry between the main characters was amazing. I could actually see why Jane would fall in love with Rochester. (And no, it's not just because Toby Stephens is good looking!) The music, the quality of production, everything was first rate. I'll definitely be watching it more than once!
