Product Description
This hardcover version of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, is jacketed, has a navy kivar binding, and is plain-edged (no thumb indexing). For this new edition, America's largest staff of lexicographers made more than 100,000 changes and added more than 10,000 new words and senses, such as 'convergence', 'Frankenfood', 'phat', 'psyops, and 'vermiculture'. The Eleventh Edition also features over 40,000 usage examples - more than ever before - which clarify confused or disputed terms. Aditionally, thousands of phrases and idioms help distinguish vocabulary for language learners. Special sections include A Handbook of Style, An Essay on the English Language, and Signs and Symbols. Over 55 million copies of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary have been sold, spanning a time period of over 100 years.

I acquired my first Merriam Webster's dictionary when I was 17. It was completely by chance, because at that time I didn't know much about reference books. It has followed me through my English studies (English is not my first language), I've translated hundreds of pages using it instead of a bilingual dictionary, and it has always been reliable, up-to-date and fun to use. I am an English teacher now, I have used many other dictionaries of similar kind, but none of them ever matched my Merriam Webster. Now I have the eleventh edition with CD, which means I'm starting my own collection of the Collegiate series.I'd recommend it to everyone because it's exhaustive but simple to use at the same time. Not many other dictionaries can match it.

M-W's 11th edition contains thousands of newly added words, (enabling parents to translate their teens' sometimes incomprehensible terminology!) for an up-to-date overview of the English language. An excellent addition for the home and office library, briefcase and of course the Scrabble set!

We have always had tabs, alphabetical, on our dictionaries, and I was surprised that this dictionary did not have such tabs.

I was impressed throughout the book by the author's amazing command of the English language, personally I learned many news words along the way. I would say that the plot is a little too linear, i.e., one subject always advances orderly to next, with few surprises along the way, and the characters, when present, are difficult to distinguish from the others. However, that is a minor caveat to this great linguistic accomplishment.

M-S Collegiate Dictionary has always been my favorite - and continues to be (while I would dearly love a full edition of the Oxford I wouldn't know where to put it all!). However, I use my dictionary mainly for the most challenging crossword after I've given up on my brain alone. I miss the "Abbreviations and Symbols for Chemical Elements" in the 11th Edition that was included in the previous ones (yes, I know they are included throughout the main body). And, I miss the "Colleges and Universities" that used to be in the editions before the 10th. Also, the contents do not list that the "Pronunciation Symbols" are on the inside back page; in fact in two places. Those nitpicks being mentioned, the MWCD is always a great value and solid resource.
