Description

Product Description
Host Lori Trespicio is from The Real World. Instructor Kristin McGee is also referred to as "choreographer." The setting is a New York hotspot, and a cool DJ supplies the music. These are not promising signs if you're seriously into yoga, but MTV Yoga is surprisingly good. Advertised as a "faster-paced, upbeat" alternative to standard yoga workouts, the practice is actually quite traditional, based on the "vinyasa" (i.e., flowing series of poses) style. Beginning with several sun salutations, which are among the most vigorous sets of poses in yoga, it includes a variety of standing positions, lunges, twists, backbends, and so on. McGee knows her stuff, especially when it comes to breath instruction, the focus of any good practice; she also breaks down several of the more difficult asanas following the main 40-minute practice. The only real flaw is that not nearly enough time is allotted for warmup, but experienced yogis could do far worse than MTV Yoga. --Sam Graham

I don't know about anyone else but I am sick of the "Rebeccareview" that keeps showing up on all the yoga reviews. They are inaccurate at best and very rarely tell the downside of anything. With that said...lets move on to reviewing this dvd. I purchased this from an Avon catalog along with the power yoga dvd from MTV. When I first tried this DVD it was really hard. I had taken classes for over a year and it completely wore me out and there were some poses that I just could not do. This is not for beginners. The power DVD is more of the same, different setting. There were no modifications offered for the balancing poses that would suit a beginner or someone that has trouble with balance. This left me very frustrated and I put both dvds back on the shelf for when I get a little more experience. I do like the workout, but I am not sure that yoga was meant to be done like a bootcamp workout. The benefits can be obtained from a hatha yoga session that moves slower, where the moves are held longer. I do use these when I really need to sweat, but the bulk of my workout comes from Yoga Zone and Kundalini Yoga, led by Gurutej Kaur.

I was impressed for this being a MTV video. It is a good workout.

I have practiced yoga for several years and am pretty flexible, yet this video challeneged we with the balancing routines. I highly enjoyed it.

As someone that has been doing Yoga for over 10 years, this one was way too easy for me, however, I realy liked it as a whole package for Extreme Beginners.

It does move a little quickly, but after you do it a couple of times and know which poses are coming next, you will have no trouble flowing.

View the DVD all the way through before you follow it for the first time... it has pose instruction at the end. The instruction would better benefit you if they were at the beginning, but you will only need to view it a couple of times if you've never done Yoga before.

The music is OK... use the DVD's "Voice Only" feature and put on a CD from your music collection instead.

The MTV Yoga provides a great workout for beginners who has had a little bit of experience. For those who has never tried yoga, this is a good buy. But beware that you should watch it through once (without trying to follow) or at least attend a yoga class in person, before actually doing the DVD; otherwise, the pace may be a little fast for you when they start doing the flowing sequences. I'm an intermediate yogi who has had over a year of experience and practices at least 3 times a week (at home or at a studio), and I still find this DVD to be a great home workout. This is definitely a good buy.
