| Elizabeth, a beautiful princess, lives in a castle and wears fancy clothes. Just when she is about to marry Prince Ronald, a dragon smashes her castle, burns her clothes with his fiery breath, and prince-naps her dear Ronald. Undaunted and presumably unclad, she dons a large paper bag and sets off to find the dragon and her cherished prince. Once she's tracked down the rascally reptile, she flatters him into performing all sorts of dragonly stunts that eventually exhaust him, allowing her to rescue Prince Ronald. But what does Prince Not-So-Charming say when he sees her? "You smell like ashes, your hair is all tangled and you are wearing a dirty old paper bag. Come back when you are dressed like a real princess." (At least he has the courtesy not to mention that the princess's crown resembles a dying sea anemone.) In any case, let's just say that Princess Elizabeth and Prince Ronald do not, under any circumstances, live happily ever after. Canadian author Robert Munsch celebrates feisty females everywhere with this popular favorite, and Michael Martchenko's scratchy, comical, pen-and-ink drawings capture the tongue-in-cheek quality of this read-aloud crowd pleaser. Author: Guest Munsch writes kids stories like nobody else! He catches their attention, tells his stories and has a wry twist at the end. The topic is extremely empowering to young girls and the humor with which he tells his tale is for all readers...not just kids!

Author: Guest We loved this book. Not only is it a very quick and entertaining read for me, my 6 year old adored the princess. There are several "messages" at work in this book which are positive reinforcements for girls of all ages. I don't want to spoil the story for anyone but it is a delightful and contemporary story that needs to be part of every young girl's library.

Author: Guest As an early childhood educator, I strongly recommend this story to all families, particularly those with little girls that like princesses. This book sends a message which contradicts the images of passivity portrayed by Disney princesses and the like. It is a fabulous baby shower gift, particularly for those expecting a baby girl. It goes very well with "Princess Smarty Pants" as well as "Father Gander".

Author: Guest I have been collecting and using Robert Munsch's books in my classroom for several years. "The Paperbag Princess" is my absolute favorite. It is the story of a young princess who must fight a fierce dragon to win back her prince. In the process she uses her brains, wit and moxie to outfox the dragon. Unfortunately, the prince turns out to be not so charming. So what does our princess do? She dumps the prince, of course!
I love the messages in this story and also the unexpected un-fairy-tale like twist at the end. I highly recommend it for all elementary age students. I've even used it with sixth graders as a comparison to other more conventional fairy-tales.

Author: Guest In a world obsessed with all things Princess this book should be very well received and appreciated by girls everywhere. A terrific story about the feisty, intelligent Princess Elizabeth who treks to save her prince from the nasty dragon only to be received with no appreciation but judgment, The Paper Bag Princess shows girls that they should be respected and appreciated for their inner beauty and strengths including determination, courage, heart and wit and not solely on their outward appearance. This book should be in every girl's library right in the middle of all her fairytale princess books. A little dose of reality is good because a girl needs to know early in life that not all relationships are worth staying in. A woman should give and receive love, respect and appreciation in order for a healthy, satisfying relationship to exist. Remember, as someone once said, "You get what you settle for." Bravo, Munsch!
