| Former animator Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Batman, Mars Attacks!) made his feature directorial debut with this delightful comedy, coscripted by the late Phil Hartman (who also appears briefly as a reporter). Wisely, they keep the story simple so as to concentrate on the characters: Pee-wee's most prized possession, his shiny new bicycle, is stolen, and he sets off on an obsessive cross-country journey, determined to recover it. Pee-wee's awkward and childish attempts to be cool and mature ("I meant to do that!!") are hysterical, as when he tells his girlfriend (Elizabeth Daly): "There's things about me you don't know, Dottie. Things you wouldn't understand. Things you couldn't understand. Things you shouldn't understand.... I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel." Look for Saturday Night Live vet Jan Hooks in a hilarious bit as a tour guide at the Alamo. And beware of Large Marge! --Jim Emerson Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Author: Guest First, in response to a previous review, there does not seem to be anything cut from the movie. It's 90 minutes long, and that agrees with how long it should be according to IMDB (Internet Movie DataBase). I don't recall any scenes that weren't on the DVD. On the other hand, I could have sworn that the line, "If you like it so much, why don't you MARRY it!" was from the movie, so either I missed it, or I'm guessing that I'm mistaken and that it's from _Pee Wee's Playhouse_ or elsewhere.
Secondly, as someone else noted, there are 4 "deleted" scenes included on the DVD that aren't mentioned in the description or on the box. However, they aren't very strong scenes, so it's easy to see why they were deleted.
All in all, it was the movie that I remembered and loved. As a 37-year-old, I appreciated more the absurdist art behind the film. My 4-year-old said that it was the best movie ever (though I skipped the part with Large Marge and two small bits of violence).

Author: Guest Growing up as a GenXer Paul Rubens was a comedy staple in my life, from his early Cheach and Chong apperances, his H.B.O. one hour special, and emmy award winning children's show "Pee Wee's Playhouse". Recently I purchased the two box sets of the "Playhouse" as a gift for my wife. Our daughter, who is 2, discovered the imagination and magic that inspired both my wife and myself as youngsters. I bought the movie, "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" for our daughter and was excited to find it still a good natured, imaginative romp with child-like wonder and humor for all ages. The only downside is that it is a little more mature and story oriented than the "Playhouse" and at times is a little scary for young children. All in all, a great comedy for the whole family.
