| Movie adaptations of Jane Austen's classic novels were all the rage (relatively speaking) in the mid-1990s. Clueless updated Austen's Emma, which was more conventionally adapted in another version (Emma) starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Emma was produced yet again, this time for British television, as were a celebrated miniseries of Pride and Prejudice and this splendid film of Austen's Persuasion. Persuasion is the story of a love that survives eight years of dormancy and the frustrating obstacles of class prejudice in 19th century England. Anne (Amanda Root) is captivated when she meets the dignified naval officer Capt. Wentworth (Ciarán Hinds), but she is advised to discourage his romantic overtures because he has no fortune. They meet again eight years later, but now Capt. Wentworth has become wealthy while Anne's father is in reduced circumstances in the wake of reckless extravagance. A series of circumstances ensue which prevent Anne and Wentworth from expressing their mutual and inevitable love. The film's success depends entirely on the subtle, superb performances of Root and Hinds. The film builds slowly, occasionally leaving you wondering if anything at all is going to happen. When it does, you realize how carefully crafted a film this is, and the final result is grandly rewarding. --Jeff Shannon Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Author: Guest I have read the book "Persuasion," and also viewed two different English movie versions, made twenty-four years apart. This version is my favorite, mainly because of the superb acting by the perfectly-chosen cast, as well as the gorgeous scenery.
However, there are some aspects of this movie that left me a bit disappointed. As much as I love Ciaran Hinds, he wasn't quite as "amiable" as the character in the book or earlier film. Amanda Root is nice-looking, but too plain in my eye to attract the attention of Mr. Elliott, who didn't know who she was when he first saw her. Some bits of storyline were altered or left out - most notably, when Mary chides Ann for not coming to her sooner, Ann says here that she "had much to do," while the book and earlier movie point out that Mary had told her not to come yet, which reflects Mary's vascillating and selfish personality better; the Musgroves' dead brother/son, who served with Captain Wentworth, is non-existent in this movie.
That said, this is still a great movie, one worth watching over and over.

Author: Guest This is a Romantic's dream film. With all the beauty of the Old English lifestyles, mannerisms, and the rewarding ending where the right person gets married to the right person, this film will satisfy your longings and yearnings in waiting for the right person to come along for you. This movie allows you to get lost in the bygone years of Englands glory, and it feeds your desire to visit the Motherland, and to partake of it's quaint villages. The cast of characters were beautifully suited for each other, and the realism of the friendships and not so good friendships, made it seem like something very familiar to our own lives. I would recommend this film to those who are happily married or to those who long to be married to the right Mate.

Author: Guest This is an incredible treat for any Jane Austen fan. Everything about this movie is excellent and it is very true to the book. It is one of my all time favorite movies...If you think it starts out too slow, remember that Persuasion is considered Jane Austen's most mature writing--this is real story telling. Be patient, pay attention, and this will be your favorite too. Just a note to parents--this movie is suitable for viewers of all ages--clean and beautiful, just like the book.
