This workbook is clear, concise, extremely helpful and well-conceived. It has enabled me to learn, relearn, review and master the simple things which we believe we know when in fact we don't. These serve as the basis for our daily conversations.

Two thumbs up for a wonderful reference guide on the proper use of Spanish pronouns and propositions. Very useful

This handy book along with a fantastic CD course I purchased entitled Behind the Wheel Spanish have really gone far in improving my Spanish.

With respect to my background, I am a self-described Spanish-holic that has bought and collected nearly every learning-Spanish product on the market. I am also the founder of Learning Spanish Like Crazy and the author of several articles on How to Learn Spanish. And now for my review of Dorothy Richmond's Practice Makes Perfect - Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions . . .

This book should be required reading for intermediate and advanced students of Spanish. It is the most comprehensive Spanish Grammar book on the topic of Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions.

The book consists of three parts. Part I (Units 1 to 14) covers pronouns. Namely, subject pronouns, interrogative pronouns, pronouns as objects of preposition, possessive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, numbers as pronouns, adjective pronouns, relative pronouns, direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns, reflexive object pronouns, sentences with two object pronouns, reciprocal pronouns, and se and the passive voice.

Part II of this book is where you will find the thee units on the topic of Spanish Prepositions (i.e. "prepositions and related terms," para and por, and "verbs and preprositons")

Part III contains a useful Appendix where you will find grammatical definitions ("the Eight Parts of Speech"), Pronoun Definitions and Charts, and what appears to be an exhaustive list of Spanish pronouns.

Unlike many Spanish grammar books that merely consist of "lectures" on the topic of Spanish Grammar, this book consists of numerous exercises to reinforce what you're studying and help you retain it. You will find countless exercises in this book including fill-in-the-blank exercises, verdadero o falso (true or false) exercises, translation exercises of sentences and even translation exercises of entire paragraphs. The book also has the answers to the exercises in the back of the book -- as opposed to right under the exercises which woould make cheating a lot more tempting.

If you are studying European Spanish you will also find this book quite useful because it also covers the European Spanish pronoun "os" in addition to the Spanish pronouns used in Latin America.

I found that the most useful unit of this book is the "para and por" unit. For many English speaking students that are learning Spanish this is probably one of the most confusing areas of Spanish Grammar -- when to use "para" and when to use "por" since they both mean "for." However, in the "para and por" unit, Dorothy Richmond demystifies this challenging area of Spanish grammar by providing the user with simple illustrations and exercises that enable the native English speaker to effortlessly determine when to use "para" or "por."

Another positive feature about this book is that it is very inexpensive (less than $9.00).

I wholeheartedly recommend this book. However, it is a resource that I recommend for the intermediate or advanced student. If you are a beginner your time and money would be better spent by buying the other book in the Practice Makes Perfect series: Spanish Verb Tenses

Full of necessary learning material, very well presented

For the price, this book can make a valuable contribution to everyone's goal of learning Spanish, but though I welcomed the practice, I did not feel the methodology was outstanding. For example, in each exercise you are basically limited to the grammatical point you have just read about so you don't really have to challenge yourself to recall what you learned 15 pages earlier. I think the translation exercises in the preposition section could have incorporated more pronouns to multiply practice, for example. So you finish the exercises using "lo que" and you think you have it, but that is usually because you do not revisit it later. There are no comprehensive exercises. In the preposition section there is much discussion distinguishing por and para, however in my mind I don't see much of a helpful distinction between one's purpose for doing something and one's motivation for doing something (which we are told is how you may to choose between the two in some instances). Also, we are told that when a person is receiving something from us use para, yet later many, many verbs are listed which require por and yet are defined as taking an action toward someone. Not surprisingly, despite all the theories we ultimately discover me must nevertheless memorize dozens of preposition-specific verbs anyway. If you finish the book you will see what I mean. This is not a fault of the author but a characteristic of the language. I especially like the perforated answer keys and wish other publishers would adopt the practice. The true/false sections are interesting reading at times, but take up a lot of the print allocated to exercises and should perhaps be condensed in future editions.
