Description

Product Description
Prescription for Nutritional Healing by nutritionist Phyllis A. Balch and James F. Balch, M.D., has long been considered one of the most trusted, comprehensive sources on the mind-boggling array of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary supplements now available. Working from the premise that a good diet promotes good health, this third edition of PNH still starts with the basics: consume fresh produce, grains, and lean meats; avoid foods that are processed or high in saturated fat; cook using glass, stainless steel, or iron--never aluminum; and drink filtered water. The authors also stand by their claim that the government-prescribed recommended daily allowances are ridiculously low, and that the book's optimal daily intake for nutrients should be followed instead.

So what's new in the third edition? Along with now-accepted remedies, like zinc and echinacea for the common cold, the Balches also explore many of the newer supplements to hit the market: SAMe (recommended for depression and joint pain), phosphatidyl serine (mental acuity), red yeast rice (cholesterol), and 5-HTP (weight loss, insomnia, depression). You'll also find an expanded chapter on alternative therapies that encompasses Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, along with a hefty section on pain control that offers a grab bag of options such as acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, chiropractic care, and massage.

Still, the bulk of the book remains the more than 250 health conditions--from everyday problems such as insect bites and bad breath to serious diseases including bulimia, cancer, and AIDS--and the nutritional protocols the Balches recommend for treatment. Since any number of supplements can be taken for the same condition, the Balches make sifting through the glut of information a little easier by separating their nutrient recommendations into four categories: essential, very important, important, and helpful. And they take a lot of the guesswork out of buying supplements by listing the brands they know and trust. Once again, the authors have squeezed in an impressive amount of information, including valuable sidebars on topics such as the dangers of aspartame; how to choose a calcium supplement; common heart problems and procedures; cancer risk factors, diagnosis, and treatments; and sports nutrition. This is not relaxing reading, but it's enormously useful. While the material can be dense, the authors still manage to present it in a straightforward manner that's understandable even for readers without a medical degree. --Norine Dworkin

I bought a copy of this book when my daughter was diagnosed with asthma when she was 3 years old. That was 12 years ago. With the information that I gained from reading this book, I was able to take her off of albuterol and refused to give her a pump. By modifying her diet and teaching her healthy habits such as what ingredients trigger her asthma, we became very proactive in using diet, herbal and homeopathic remedies to treat her asthma. Today my daughter is a healthy asthma drug free teen and it is largely due to the information that I was able to collect through various research including this book. Without this knowledge, I am sure she would be on asthma medication the rest of her life. I am now purchasing an updated copy to learn more about alternative remedies for ADHD to treat my 6 year old nephew.

I have used this book for the last 8 years, starting with the first edition. With each new edition, there's always more offered to help prevent, maintain and even cure our health problems. I have given this book as gifts to friends and family. The most recent was to a dear friend whose daughter was recently diagnosed with Endometriosis. This is a phenomenal book that every household MUST have.

This book is great it offers many natural choices for healing minor ailments and illnesses. I have tried everything listed for my stomach issues as well as my headaches and some of the rememdies worked extremely well. Maybe it's just a placebo effect, but I'm sold on this book.

I have studied nutrition and work with various nutritionists. I use this book constantly when wanting to look up all the various suggestions on trying to find a solution to any of the various "diseases."

The book gives a good sensible explanation of the various subjects and then goes through all the things have been known to help.

When you build good health, disease tends to fall away, and this book gives good examples of what can be missing in your diet when you experience these various maladies.

Its always good to contact a health professional when some of these problems are pending, but with the knowledge of what is going on and various remedies offered, you can talk to them informed of what is happening.

Not only are there suggestions on vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc., but also suggestions such as lifestyle changes that can be made to help you towards health. I recommend it.

This book is an excellent general self help medical guide for a great many medical ailments. It consolidates medical and nutritional knowledge and has a very good index so desired information is easy to find. Some of the information is subjective and needs to be adjusted to each individual's body chemistry. A good baseline information source.
