Description

Product Description
Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking. --Tom Keogh

This is one of those movies that never gets old.

Cooper plays an excellent Alvin York, a newly-enlisted "conscientious objector" who struggles with the idea of taking life in battle.

York is down to earth and takes a common sense approach to life, which makes for some comical dialog later with a few of the "city-boy" soldiers.

All of the characters are fantastic. My favorites, among York (Gary Cooper) are Pastor Pile (Walter Brennan), York's mom (Margaret Wycherly), and 'Pusher' Ross(George Tobias).

For those who wonder why it took so long for SERGEANT YORK to make his journey to DVD, all you have to be familiar with is how AWFUL this movie looked when TCM ran it on TV. Like so many older Warner pictures, it needed to be restored, and over and over again, the grand old studio founded by the brothers Warner is restoring is glittering gems for DVD to look and sound terrific.

Now GARY COOPER and SGT. YORK will join the many Warner masterworks that have been filling my video shelf for the last several years. It's also wonderful that WB is giving SGT. YORK the 2-disc treatment, with a docu on Cooper as well as one on the making of the film.

Because I'm such a Gary Cooper fan, I'm going for the box, as it were...THE GARY COOPER SIGNATURE COLLECTION which has the equally masterful THE FOUNTAINHEAD, the exciting WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE, and the highly entertaining westerns DALLAS and SPRINGFIELD RIFLE. I was beginning to think that WB had forgotten about Gary Cooper, with only FRIENDLY PERSUASION and LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON available.

Now, they've righted their wrong, and brought us another slew of great, with the message of SERGEANT YORK more timely than ever.

Wow, it is simply amazing that studios can put all this trash out on DVD and somehow leave this classic hidden on the shelf! This is an amazing movie, and is definitely due to be on DVD. Looks as though it has no special features which isn't cool, they could have at least thrown in an original trailer and some old newsreels. Also, I wish they would have put both the B&W and Color version on the disc. Great movie, they just can't make them this good anymore!

This is really a classic American movie and it boggles the mind why it took the studio so long to release it. Sgt. York is played by Gary Cooper in what I personally believe is his best performance. Walter Brennan is fabulous as the folksy preacher. I particularly remember the turkey shooting contest in which York demonstrated his skill with a rifle. Recently, American Rifleman magazine published a great story on Sgt. York that is well worth reading!

This is a movie that I remember as a child/teenager. It seems that alot of good movies that appeared on saturday matinee television are no longer being shown or sold. Sgt. York was one of these. It has been on about every "please release on dvd" wish list that I have seen. It is one of those time honored simple stories that resonates within you. It honors the type of man who can set aside his own differences to do what needs to be done. Sgt. York is a classic human interest/war epic that deserves to be seen on dvd. Dont confuse classic as typical though. This movie is set apart from the norm. I am thrilled to see this on dvd now. It is about time they release!

I gave it five stars despite the fact that there aren't any dvd special features. They could have done much more for this dvd. There are many things that have been done about the life and story of Sgt. York. Yet, even with the negligence the studio has shown the story itself is strong enough to warrent five stars.
