Description

Product Description
Sewing is back! Young, crafty women are discovering the fun and creativity of working with fabric, needle, and thread to create simple, colorful skirts, suitable for showing off as wearable art. Sew What! Skirts assumes no prior sewing experience (and no home ec. class or mother with sewing skills!), and doesn’t get bogged down with overly complicated instructions or patterns.

Author Francesca DenHartog, a fabric fanatic and sewing instructor, has stripped skirts down to the basics: 15 styles, ranging from an A-line to a circle, wraparound, gored panel, tiered “hippie,” layered, and more. All it takes to get started is basic body measurements (no need to go out and buy an expensive pattern), a machine, great fabric, fun embellishments, and a few sewing fundamentals.

With a creative can-do attitude, playful photographs, and super-simple step-by-step instructions, Sew What! Skirts will connect a whole new generation with the craft of making clothing that expresses your own unique look and personality. It’s all about the fabric, as DenHartog demonstrates with the colorful array of patterns and motifs featured throughout.

Whimsical, colorful, and easy, the designs in this book are sure to unleash the creative spirit of every budding seamstress.

I'm a novice sewer, discouraged by several less than ideal outcomes with "beginner" puchased patterns. This book has helped make sewing the fun and creative hobby that I had hoped and envisioned when I purchased my machine. The book gives excellent directions(though I did have to think a bit about the selvage/layout instructions...labeling the selvage line in the pics would have been helpful, but it won't stop you). The styles and samples of skirts are completely up to date and really fun, endless possibilites. I've made one A-line, I'm getting better as I go along, and I have a wrap and tiered skirt planned. I may even try to apply the self patterning concept to some PJ bottoms...copying some that I like. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next Sew What! book.

This book is amazing! I was able to make my own skirt in about 1.5 hours(mostly because it took me half an hour to uncoordinatedly turn the waistband inside out....) I love how it fits(perfectly the first time!) and that it was so easy to make. I made the Beach Wrap Skirt. The instructions were very clear and there was a wide range of skirts to make. I'm off to the shop to pick out fabric for another skirt!

Due to the increasing prices of clothing and the lack of cute styles out there, I decided to take on the task of learning how to sew my own clothes. I've made a few simple baby quilts, but that's about it. I started by purchasing a Betsy Ross pattern and cute Amy Butler fabric. My first attempt at sewing a skirt was a disaster. Even though I cut out the pattern that fit the closet to my measurements it was HUGE! After all of the anticipation and the money I had spent on a pattern and fabric I wanted to CRY! I purchased this book on Amazon in a last ditch effort to live the dream, of crafting my own beautiful skirt, that would fit and not cost a fortune. This book is amazing!!! Just this weekend I whipped up the cutest little A-line skirt in about two hours and it's just darling! In fact, I'm wearing it right now. It fits me better than any skirt I own. I used a big funky pink and brown Amy Butler floral fabric and my skirt looks like it would have been purchased from a hip little boutique, but cost me about 15.00. The directions were simple, the pictures were incredibly helpful, and I imagine I'll be sewing up at least five more of these for my Spring/Summer wardrobe.

I absolutely love this book! I am teaching my 16 year old daughter to sew and we started with this book. She is very creative and has started doing some wonderful things with just a little help. I love the way both of us can create our own patterns, in different sizes and have the same great fit. This book really fits the bill for a wide mix of needs. If you are a beginner or an experienced seamstress I think this book would be a wonderful addition to what you may already have. I have used this book more then any other in my sewing library and it was worth every cent I paid and more.

Well maybe not but I can assure you that with an ounce of patience and a cupful of enthusiasm you will be whipping up custom made skirts in no time at all. You'll even be holding your hand out to your friends in a slow down gesture, take a number please... (I wrote a reveiw on Aussie Bid dot com for this book too)

Seriously this book is that good, and I've been sewing for nearly 20 years now! The book is a breath of fresh air. The picures and diagrams are lovely and easy to follow. Remember that this book was written in the USA so be prepared for coversion if you are a metric kind of person (thank goodness Australian tape measures come with metric and imperial on the one tape).

When you order this book go and get yourself some butchers paper, a ruler and some pens/ textas. You need to draft a a very basic flat pattern using your own measurement. This becomes your basis for creating marvellous skirts that will fit you. My first project was the straight skirt, I made this with a black fabric with a self-print. Even with the modifications I did (it has a lovely thigh split, the book guides you through this, with the addition of press stud tape for modesty)skirt- from drafting to wearing, took less then 1 1/2 hours.

The thing that made me fall the most in love with this book is that it has very clear and visual instructions on setting a zipper /fly (or what ever you call those things with teeth that hold your skirt together).

The book I bought from Amazon is hard covered with spiral binding. The spiral binding allows the book to lay flat when you are working from it )(without the pages flipping shut). you're also shown how to make skirts that are:

- Straight with variations including simple pleats, splits, long and short, etc

- a line with layers, wrapped etc

- irregular hem lines (think pixies skirts)- SO EASY!

- ruffled

- etc

Well worth the investment! I am off to order another copy for my Mother (she keeps stealing mine) and for a friends Birthday. I am skirt girl and I adore this book. Now if only they could make a book like this for beautiful, easy, tasteful blouses and tops.
