| Growing up as part of a large African-American family in a small town in Michigan, Patty Pinner spent her childhood helping the women of the housethe "Queens of Soul Food"whip up the sugar-filled treats that crowned family dinners, neighborhood gatherings, and church socials. In SWEETS, Patty mixes the down-home maxims and womanly advice shared at these chatty, gossip-filled baking marathons with recipes for her family's magical concoctions. The book includes more than 100 desserts, most shared by and named for family members ranging from Cud'n Daisy to Patty's beloved grandmother, My My. Soul food favorites such as Old-Fashioned Sweet Potato Pone and Cud'n Eunice's Tea Cakes are featured alongside delights like Miss LaLou's Bourbon Balls, Down-Home Banana Ice Cream, and even Aint Laverta's Dr. Pepper Cake. Desserts shared in the company of a loving family are always the sweetest, and with SWEETS in hand you'll be able to share the comforts and confections of Patty's sugar kitchen with your loved ones. Author: Guest This isn't just a cookbook, it's a national treasure! Over the last few years I have purchased numerous cookbooks that center around Southern cooking or Soul Food. This one tops them all. From cover to cover it is a joy to read. The photographs are awesome. This book took a great deal of time to write. Perhaps 100 years. The recipes date back that long. It is a story of families, American families, that we all need to read, enjoy and praise. The recipes are wonderful, homey, comforting, easy to make. I LOVE this book! If you buy only one cookbook this year, Patty Pinner's book is THE one! Thank you Ms. Pinner for sharing your incredible family with the world. I am overwhelmed.

Author: Guest This book is a family album, it is Afro-Americana story-telling at it's finest and it is also a damn fine collection of dessert recipes.
Add to that accomplishment the beautiful style in which it is all done and you have a must have book for your cooking shelf and a gift all women of color will smile about full of sweet, sweet memories.

Author: Guest I own a lot a cookbooks and have even written one of my own, but I have never seen anything quite like Sweets. The family stories were so captivating I could not quite reading them. What a truely unique and beautiful family Ms. Pinner is blessed with. In addition to the book being absolutely charming, the recipes are good too! I'm going to give a copy to my best friend for her birthday nex month.

Author: Guest When I reviewed this book "Sweets" I said to my daughter. Ms. Pinner must be a relatie of ours. The recipes are so familiar. Not only are the recipes familiar but the pictures and the memories are familiar also. I will be using this book quite often. She even had the old fashion "Nana Pudding" receipe that was used before they starting using instant pudding. You Go Girl!!
