Since I am in the initial stages of learning my tai chi, initially I was not enthusiastic about this dvd, but once I started with a teacher I have found this video is an excellent complement for learning this complicated and subtle martial art.

He gives meticulous and detailed explanation of the hand and feet movement and positions, and also shows the right postures and stances.

The dvd has very good and clear images. I recommend you buy it but also get a teacher, because it is impossible to learn tai chi with a video, as I tried initially.

I will buy also his Tai Chi Sword video, since he masters also that art.

As a student of Tai Chi and having purchased several DVD's on the subject, I have found that most of the teachers out there face the camera which makes learning very difficult because when the instructor moves left, you have to move right. This is NOT fun and very distracting. One teacher, however, Dr. Keith Jeffrey has a series called " Tai Chi for Busy People" He shows you several forms on the beach but then takes you into his studio which has 12 foot sections of mirrors where his back is to you do that you can perform with him and yet also see him front-wise in the mirror. This DVD, so far, has been the most effective one for me to learn by. You can find him on the web at www. EasyTaiChi.com

Although this is an older tai chi video now it's still one of the best out there. This video presents the Yang style short form, with very clear and detailed instructions. Dr. Yang and his students have won competitions in China, which is a good sign, but not necessarily a guarantee of an instructor's ability to teach, but I believe the teaching on this video is quite good.

Dr. Lam also has a Sun style tai chi video which is different from the Yang style in that it incorporates moves from ba gua and hsing i, the two other internal boxing arts besides tai chi, and even shaolin kung fu. The Chen style of tai chi also has more shaolin-like movements, and fast movements and high kicks, which were eliminated from the Yang style form in favor of slower, more flowing movements for reasons of health and so less healthy and fit people could do the form and benefit from it. This was done by Yang Cheng Fu early in the last century. Anyway, if you're looking for something a little different in the way of a tai chi video then I can recommend Dr. Lam's video on the Sun style also.

One final comment. If you can, eventually you should try to learn the long form of your style in addition to the short form. Many tai chi masters don't think much of the short forms because they don't think they provide the full health benefits. My own teacher, who is admittedly very traditional, feels this way. This issue aside, the long forms do represent the original art and if you are so inclined, I would recommend you learn the long form too just for your own knowledge and development. You can always do the short form when you don't have the time for the long one. I finally learned the long Yang form (I studied Wu style originally) and am very happy I did.

Whichever way you decide to go, this is a good video from Dr. Lam. Good luck and happy tai chi practicing!

I found Dr Paul Lam's video very helpful. It helped me be aware of proper posture and stance and I was pleased to see that he also used a back view as the front view is difficult to follow. I recommend it as a study aide between weekly classes. I found that it kept me motivated to practise. Money well spent.
