| The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New York monastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuates the essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog's instincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the key to successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978 classic guide How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend. Now the monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy's life in The Art of Raising a Puppy. The book observes a litter of monastery puppies from birth to 12 weeks. Tender photographs and dialogue reflect these precious first few weeks of life. Even at this time, the human-canine link is vital; the monks stress the importance of gentle touch to help forge this connection. Basic puppy training techniques are explored and executed, all of which puppy owners should find easy to implement. Virtually all types of dog problems and dog training are examined in the book, always in compassionate and easily comprehensible language. The monks also look well beyond surface training techniques to analyze the roots of dogs' problems and explain how training can help. Owners are taught how to gently assert dominance over their dog, which will make for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship. Beautiful black-and-white photographs of monastery puppies will pull at every heartstring. Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Author: Guest This book has been so helpful to me. I have an 8 week old german shepherd and I was clueless how to train him until I read this book. It is full of practical and useful tips any dog owner can use!!

Author: Guest I have been raising my German Shepard with this book in hand and she's growing into a delightful yet manageable puppy. The Monks of New Skete have shared a system that uses appropriate and effective disciplining techniques in combination with fun training exercises. They teach more of an "attitude" than a specific system for training, but that attitude helps beginning dog owners understand the line between breaking a dog's spirit and building a spirited relationship between a dog and his master.

Author: Guest Great Book, very regimented approach. Well worth reading and aspiring toward!

Author: Guest I work in a local Animal Hospital and I see thousands of dogs walk through our doors...some of them well trained, and some of them not. This book gives you information on everything from hand raising an abandoned puppy, puppy stages and development to training. Most people aren't aware that the only real successful way to have a well trained, well rounded, happy dog is by raising and training with love. Yes, you can succeed in training your dog with an iron fist, but your dog's scared, cowering submission will more than likely turn into agressive, violent behavior towards you or your loved ones. I have had nothing but success in reading this book and it is the only book I recommend in my hospital to owner's with new puppies.

Author: Guest This fine "puppy book" gets 5 stars from me because it covers just about everything
a potential puppy owner would be looking for in a puppy book. Even though the New Skete Monks raise German Shepherd puppies, the text is written to pertain to any breed of puppy.
The Monks have wonderful ideas for all stages of puppy life and the books takes us
through the months as our puppies age. The Monks even help us eat our dinner in
peace and quiet without having a young puppy leaping and begging at the table.
Photographs of of young ones appear throughout the book and only add to this
excellent book.
There are several references in the book to problem puppies which the Monks have
taken in and helped in owner survival. It is most interesting to see how the problems are solved and in only a caring and kind way.
Please enjoy this fine book as I have with my two Whippet puppies.
