Description

Product Description
This heartfelt drama tells us it's an AIDS movie that's not about AIDS. When this film keeps its promise (roughly the first three-quarters), it's a winner, a film about a truly notable friendship between two 11-year-old boys. Diagnosed with AIDS from a blood transfusion, Dexter (Joseph Mazzello) has gratefully bypassed most of Kübler-Ross's stages of death. He is, however, an outcast among his peers until Erik (Brad Renfro) comes along and finds him quite normal. Their bond deepens as they look for a cure for the disease using odd forms of scientific theory. Part educational text, part Mark Twain adventure, part tearjerker, the movie relies on something not found in movies these days: a love affair of male friendship. At its center are two of the best pre-actors around. Mazzello (Jurassic Park) has a professional presence on screen. The wild card is Renfro in only his second role (the other was The Client). As the outgoing, Huck Finn-ish boy, he has impressive physical abilities that communicate a naturalness on screen. The film's sappy hospital scenes bog down the picture tremendously, but they do lead to two special scenes that end the movie. The Cure is an assured directorial debut by TV actor Peter Horton (thirtysomething). An interesting note: single mothers raise both kids, a fact never lingered on--refreshingly so--in the script written by Robert Kuhn. --Doug Thomas

I have to say this is one of the most touching and saddest films i've ever seen and I'm not even exagerating. This is one of the most well acted and saddest films! It stars Joseph Mazzello(Jurassic Park) and Brad Renfro(Ghost World), who are some of the best actors around. The film is about Dexter(Mazzello) who is a eleven year old boy who unfortunetly got AID's through a blood transusion, him and his mom are shunned out from the town because of his sickness and just live there lives by staying at there home everyday and all day. Brand Renfro plays a troubled, rebel teenager named Erik who befriends Dexter one day and soon after becomes friends, they both go threw a bunch of obstacles together. One day they both are at a store buying candy when Erik stumbles upon a magazine with a man claiming that he has found the cure for AID's which sparks Erik and Dexter into going to New Orleans to find the man and help Dexter survive before its too late. Its a film with heart and fascination. Theres this one absolutley tear jerking scene where Dexter and Erik's mom are face to face, the scene is so sad, especially the scene before that. It was a privalege to see this film.

This movie has to be one of the most touching films that I have ever had the privalege of seeing, it was touching in so many ways. The movie stars Joseph Mazzello (Jurassic Park, Simon Birch, Wooly Boys) And Brad Renfro (Apt Pupil, Ghost Town), the premise involves a young eleven year old boy, Dexter (Mazzello), who got AIDS from a blood transfution and has ever since, along with his mom, been shunned out from the town due to there unawareness of the disease and just them being overall uncomportable. Eric (Renfro), a rebelious teenager who gets into a lot of trouble befriends Dexter one day and before they know it, they become best friends. When they are shopping for candy in a local grocerie store one day, they see on a magazine that a man has supposedly found the cure for AIDS in New Orleans, so they quickly set out alone to find the man and get the cure that can possibly save Dexter. There is one scene at the end which involves Dexters mom and Eric's mom, it was so intense (in an emotional way) and just made you think so much that you couldn't help but start crying. It was amazingly touching and you would have to be a robot not to be touched by this film. All the actors gave excellent performances and the film was a great cryfest. I recommend this on DVD, you won't be dissapointed. Five stars.

I have seen this film many, many times and now own the DVD. I never tire of watching it. It is a film with substance and heart! To the teacher who posted below about showing this film to her students, bravo to her! Young people....especially school children (a lot of who tend to be bullies and teasers which leave lasting scars) should be made to watch this film about true loyalty, friendship and unyielding determination to fight without giving up! The performances by Joseph Mazello and Brad Renfro are unparalleled and truly their chemistry is captivating. The performances of Annabella Scoria as Joseph's (Dexter's) mother is a gem. Diana Scarwid as Brad Renfro's(Eric's mother) mother is a bit shallow, but that's because her character is ignorantly evil. ONe thing I never understand, though. When the boys take off on their own for New Orleans, Dexter leaves a note for his mother but nothing is ever mentioned about Eric's mother and her dealing with the boy's leaving. Was she so wrapped up in herself that she did not know where they went? They were gone for a few days. Did she not notice that her son was gone? She was going to ship him off to camp the following Monday after she found out his best friend was a little boy with aids. The next time we see her is right after Dexter has died and Eric and Dex's mother pull up in front of the house and Eric's mother pulls him out of the car and begins to hit him, which is when Dex's mother really lets her have it!! (Great scene..I would have slapped the tar out of her). I never understood that loss of continuity in the script. But it doesn't matter. This film isa heartbreaking classic and truly a testament to the word "friendship".

If you want to know how loving and/or caring kids are...show them this movie. You'll learn a lot about their "true colors." I am a teacher that has shown this movie to all of my students for the past six years. I teach kids (with this movie) that even though they might have it bad because they live in rough and poor neighborhoods, they might actually have it better than others. Most of my female students cry because it is such a sad story. I've also had many of my male students cry as well. None of my students have ever made fun of each other about crying. This story brings up several topics that many people would dare not talk about. It is a great movie and if you are a teacher, this is a "must see" for all your kids!!!
