Hard-hitting, brave and brilliantly researched, Naomi Wolf's indictment of the Bush administration will open wide the eyes of young patriots. If anything will urge the lethargic public to act, "The End of America" will. A must-read for both Democrats and Republicans.

Yes, "The End of America" is written in a passionate, almost alarmist voice.
Yes, the author is not a "historian," "sociologist," or "political scientist" based on pedigree or formal academic distinction.
And, yes, not all of us have knowingly experienced every, single violation of the democratic rights about which she warns (though how many of us can say for sure that our phones haven't been tapped or emails read?).
But, wake up people! There is enough in this book that WE ALL KNOW IS REAL and that WE ALL KNOW SHOULD CONCERN US. First and foremost, democracy requires active participation from its citizens. Freedom is a privilege that many "normal" citizens and countries have watched slip through their fingers (hello, Nazi Germany).
What makes us so different? Are we really less scared of our government? Look at how they beat down Cindy Sheehan (which is, as the author points out, exactly what our government probably wants us to do to avoid future political descent). Are we really willing to risk being labeled "unAmerican"--and our personal safety, financial security and social reputation--like the Dixie Chicks?
It is a fact that our country has ignored the laws of the Geneva Convention by labeling and torturing "enemy combatants." We suspend habeas corpus on a daily basis in Gitmo. And we can't even wear certain t-shirts in some public places because they might piss somebody off.
The message of this book is that IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO RECAPTURE OUR LIBERTIES. It is a warning to all of us about how EASILY our rights and our democracy can be slowly taken away from us. It is also a reminder of the importance of these rights. Without them, our lives and freedom would be dramatically altered. They are worth fighting for--and it is imperative that all of us WAKE UP and see that our government can easily transform itself under our noses if we take these rights for granted.
This book is not partisan. It is not for or by an "expert." It is for every American who loves this country, democracy and freedom.

Ms. Wolf reminds us that we are responsible to ensure that our constitutional freedoms and civil liberties are adheared to. In her most recent book, The End of America, Ms. Wolf points out how easily a totalitarian shift can occur and has historically occured in various countries thoughout the world right under the noses of it's democraticly minded citzens. Her call to all of us to be mindful and to monitor the actions of our elected officals is a reminder that indeed it is the citizenry of a wonderful democracy such as ours that has the ultimate power. There is nothing more patriotic then calling on our government to protect our civil liberties and Freedom. We all need a gentle reminder now and then that it is the voters that truly have the last say. Bravo

This book borders on pure silliness. The author is simply a left-wing Bush-hater and she makes that perfectly clear. Her claims are almost imbecilic. The book is so bad, in fact, that I'm glad that I didn't buy it. I found a copy that someone left on a park bench. Apparently the original owner didn't value it very much.
The author, who has absolutely no credentials as an historian or in any other field related to the subject matter of her book, shows an absolute total ignorance of our history and world history in general. She tries hard to construct what she claims are the steps that always take place in a country that shifts towards dictatorship. Oddly, she misses one of the steps that anyone who has studied the subject even superficially is aware of and that is that such nations invariably band and confiscate. That has happened in virtually ever single case of a country shifting to a dictatorship. Being left-wing to the extreme, she probably just ignored that step because it probably doesn't fit her preconceived notions. Either that or she didn't even do basic research on her subject. Basically, she simply hates Bush and she makes a pathetic and idiotic attempt based on no real knowledge of history or politics to prove that Bush is trying to become a dictator. She completely ignores the historical context of the times and the challenges we face as well as similar periods of our history. Her historical ignorance is sublime and breathtaking in scope. When a television interviewer pointed out that she has no credentials for writing such a book, she defended herself by claiming that the founding fathers wanted "regular" people to defend the constitution ignoring the obvious fact that those who write "authoritative" books on a subject should at least know the subject they are writing about. The author actually tried to make it sound like her ignorance was a virtue!
This book is a complete waste.
