Description

Product Description
New York cab driver Korben Dallas didn't mean to be a hero, but he just picked up the kind of fare that only comes along every five thousand years: A perfect beauty, a perfect being, a perfect weapon. Now, together, they must save the world. Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman star in acclaimed director Luc Besson's outrageous sci-fi adventure, an extravagantly styled tale of good against evil set in an unbelievable twenty-third century world.

The regular DVD of this movie was long a reference disc in the home theater world, but the first blu-ray version was a mastering flop. I just purchased and watched the new remastered blu-ray and it's awesome, it made me glad to retire my old DVD and embrace this new generation of home entertainment.

Got this via Sony's Exchange program earlier in the week. All is have to say is WOW! Pardon the cliche, but as many times as I've seen this movie, watching this remastered version made me felt like I'd never seen it before. I noticed so many details on the screen this time. Kudos to SONY for fixing their mistake and selling it to new buyers for an reasonable price. One only minor gripe is that SONY should have added more extras on the disc, that would've made this a perfect disc.

I rented the original version first after reading the thrashing reviews it got and I personally didn't think it looked that bad but I saw that a remastered version was on the way so I figured I'd wait on that one anyway. I'm glad I did. I haven't watched the new one from beginning to end yet but a quick glance at a couple of chapters made it clear that the picture quality is much better.

To the other reviewer that wasn't sure if anything changed; according to highdefdigest.com Sony used a different master for the remastered copy. The resolution will not change it's simply a cleaner original and better processing that made the difference.

Like everyone else that purchased the 1st version, I was deeply dissappointed in the video quality of this great movie. Don't get me wrong I love this movie and I consider it to be one of the best SciFi movies of all time, if not then in the 90s.

And because of fellow members within the amazon community I found out that Sony was doing an exchange program in which you could send Sony the 1st version of The Fifth Element and they would send you back the remastered version free-of-charge. Naturally, at first I was a little skeptical but I e-mailed the address provided by the members of amazon and sure enough the "exchange program" was indeed True. So I sent my "ugly" version of The Fifth Element and just today, I got the new version in the mail, free-of-charge. Along with a letter from Sony Pictures that said:

"Dear M. Cardenas

Thank you for contacting Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Enclosed you will find your remastered copy of "The Fifth Element" on Blu-ray.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment strives to bring you the highest quality entertainment product available and we appreciate your continued support.

Sincerely,

SPHE Consumer Affairs"

Now everyone knows the story, right? Well to put it in 10 or less words: Its Amazing and was before its time. But let's skip all that stuff and get to the core of this review: The Image Quality.

In general, It does look far better than the 1st version, which was, in some cases worst than the VHS version. The image is clearer and brighter and you can really tell that Sony Pictures learned from their mistakes. And with the addition of "TrueHD" sound, those HD sound systems that you paid for can really show you why exactly you paid such a high price for them.

Overall, great movie and (finally) with a great picture. Get it if you don't have it yet OR (like me) Exchange it and enjoy.

PS: I have added a couple of pictures to The Fifth Element Gallery, to show people what's different in terms of the Cover Art of the box. Hope they help some of you guys/gals

I purchased the original Blu-Ray DVD, and just now received the "remastered" Blu-Ray DVD in the mail. There isn't a single place on the DVD jacket insert that says the DVD is remastered. In fact, the jacket on the "remastered" DVD is nearly identical to the jacket on the former release. The front of the jacket is identical. The back of the jacket has a few things moved around. The only new information is in the bottom inch on the back. There is a gold logo that says "Full HD 1080," but both jackets still say (in 2 places each) that the resolution is 1920 x 1080p. Did something change? The new jacket also now says "Dolby True HD," whereas the old one just said "Dolby Digital." I haven't opened the new release yet, because I am wondering if I should send it back. I was hoping for a crystal clear statement that said the video was remastered. There is no such statement on the jacket.

(The only reason I rated the movie as 3 stars is because you can't post a "review" until you rate the item.)
