| In a world with no poverty, no crime, no sickness and no unemployment, and where every family is happy, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to be the community's Receiver of Memories. Under the tutelage of the Elders and an old man known as the Giver, he discovers the disturbing truth about his utopian world and struggles against the weight of its hypocrisy. With echoes of Brave New World, in this 1994 Newbery Medal winner, Lowry examines the idea that people might freely choose to give up their humanity in order to create a more stable society. Gradually Jonas learns just how costly this ordered and pain-free society can be, and boldly decides he cannot pay the price. Author: Guest MINY INTERMEDIATE BOOK CLUB
The Giver by Lois Lowry is an eerie yet interesting story and very original. Lowry digs into the deeper meaning in the society we live in today. The story is about a boy named Jonas who is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory by the Giver. This is the most honored job in the community. Only the Receiver of Memory remembers pain and grief, but he is also the only one to remember love and pleasure, music and color. After finding out the truth about his society, he and the Giver devise a plan to give the memories to the community, but the plan must change. Lois Lowry leaves the reader with a cliffhanger ending.
The ideas presented in the book made us think about how our future could be: What if this happens to us? What if things get so bad we decide to take pills to avoid strong feelings, be locked up, tell lies, never know love, have no privacy, prevent diversity? Are some of these things beginning to happen today? The book shows the controlling power of people who take over everything and use it for no good just to be safe.
A few of us had read The Giver when we were younger, but this time we enjoyed it even more. We are glad we decided to read it.

Author: Guest The emotions are powerfully drawn. The characters and excellent writing shine throughout the novel. The plot has enough adventure for young readers and enough depth for older readers too. Some slightly darker scenes might disturb some readers but will move them at the same time and strengthen the book's message.

Author: Guest I randomly picked this book up at the library and couldn't put it down once I started. Honestly, I was expecting the sort of teen horror stuff that Lowry is famous for and thought it would just be a quick read. Well, it was a quick read, sure, but certainly not easy to get out of my mind. It really has some great themes to discuss with others. I was thoroughly absorbed in the story and the characters and thought that Lowry did an excellent job of creating the world inside this book.
I would recommend this book to adolescents and adults both and think it would be a very interesting book to discuss with both groups.

Author: Guest i have always liked sci-fi books but this one beets em all. this book is amazing. so full of detail and description. I have fallen in love with the futureistic world that lois lowry has created. Its like the perfect world. no one gets hurt. but there are some things that i dislike such as how in that world once you get to a certain age or if you have an identical twin you get your life taken away. what are we animals, i dont appear to be a dog but go ahead and check just to make sure. i also disliked the excessive rules. but over all this is one of the best books i have ever read it has become my favorite book. i recommend this book to anyone who loves to read science fiction.
