Description

Product Description
Among the library of investment books promising no-fail strategies for riches, Benjamin Graham's classic, The Intelligent Investor, offers no guarantees or gimmicks but overflows with the wisdom at the core of all good portfolio management.

The hallmark of Graham's philosophy is not profit maximization but loss minimization. In this respect, The Intelligent Investor is a book for true investors, not speculators or day traders. He provides, "in a form suitable for the laymen, guidance in adoption and execution of an investment policy" (1). This policy is inherently for the longer term and requires a commitment of effort. Where the speculator follows market trends, the investor uses discipline, research, and his analytical ability to make unpopular but sound investments in bargains relative to current asset value. Graham coaches the investor to develop a rational plan for buying stocks and bonds, and he argues that this plan must be a bulwark against emotional behavior that will always be tempting during abrupt bull and bear markets.

Since it was first published in 1949, Graham's investment guide has sold over a million copies and has been praised by such luminaries as Warren E. Buffet as "the best book on investing every written." These accolades are well deserved. In its new form--with commentary on each chapter and extensive footnotes prepared by senior Money editor, Jason Zweig--the classic is now updated in light of changes in investment vehicles and market activities since 1972. What remains is a better book. Graham's sage advice, analytical guides, and cautionary tales are still valid for the contemporary investor, and Zweig's commentaries demonstrate the relevance of Graham's principles in light of 1990s and early twenty-first century market trends. --Patrick O'Kelley

Value investing works provided that investors correctly measure the intrinsic value of a company. Many analysts and investors will bend their definition to make it compatible with their desired investments.

Value investing can work when the investor objectively qualifies the fundamentals of a stock.

This book is a must read because of how it has changed the investing world. Every brokerage house you run into is going to use the Dollar Cost Averaging and wide diversification system. This book is the foundation of solid Value Investing. You can learn a lot from it and if your real smart, you can build on it as times have changed.

Ben Graham is not an easy read. It's even tougher to follow his advice. When Graham wrote his definitive book, mutual funds were for rich people. Times have changed. So, must the investing methodologies. It's fitting that Zweig complements, simplifies and adapts (or at least attempts to) Graham's monumental work. Overall, it's a book that every budding investor should read. Though I am not, an expert investor by any shot, I would suggest every budding investor to read this book, at least once.

I have read several books on investing and this is by far the best one I have read so far. I found it quite funny that the 70's were a redo of the 30's and as Zweig's commentary points out, 1999-2002 was a redo of the 70's. The original text was very educational in that it teaches a very value oriented way to invest. Graham's three rules have tempered what I buy and what I dont buy. The commentary provides an even better understanding of Graham's text as it relates what happend in the last few years to what Graham talks about. I really enjoyed this book a lot and got a lot out of it. As a physician by background, I have no formal investment or financial training. I have also told several friends to read this book and they have also been very impressed by the quality and timeless nature of Graham's work. A+++, a must read for anyone who wants to make money on the stock market with minimal risk but is willing to sacrifice explosive gains by not buying issues like google.
