A magnificent collection of English villages, now available in a convenient new format for travelers.
Clustered around the parish church and green, or winding along an eccentrically curving street, villages are the very embodiment of Englishness. The village inn and the local farm, great houses, humble cottages, and beautiful country gardens speak of a way of life that has developed peacefully since Anglo-Saxon times.
History, location, and local building materials have etched the distinct character of each region onto each village. Honey-colored cottages form peaceful Cotswold communities; splendid thatched roofs sweep over eaves and windows in the villages of Hampshire; half-timbering, flint, and limestone give Suffolk hamlets their characteristic appearance; and limestone, sandstone, and millstone grit lend a darker look to those of Yorkshire, Durham, and Northumberland.
Grouped by area and subdivided by countynorthern, midland, eastern, southern, and westernthis is a spectacular celebration of England's picture perfect villages. 285 color photographs.Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Author: Guest This book could well be called "Churches in the Villages of England." Of the two or three photographs per village, one or two are of the local church. Interesting as these may be, I was looking for pictures of the houses, streets, and squares of the villages, as well as the countryside that surrounds them.

Author: Guest I bought this book because I am obsessed with England and wanted a coffee table book that portrayed that. The photographs in this book are gorgeous, exemplifying the beauty of England and the villages within. Of course, this book makes me want to travel to the UK and explore all of these historic villages!
