As a lover of guidebooks, I used Lonely Planet and Moon guidebooks during our 6-day trip (in addition to reading many other books before the trip) along with the Ultimate Guidebook (6th ed.). These were helpful for additional historical/site background, restaurant details, site hours, and detailed "downtown" maps, but as the driver, I kept saying to the passenger "give me Andrew," "check Andrew", etc., for specific maps and tidbits to read along the way. The superb maps include the information you need and want, from mile markers to farmers' market to canyon names, while remaining easily readable. I highly recommend this as a guide you can turn to for key information while ON THE ROAD, for example, on the drive up to Waimea Canyon. As you can see by how we felt on a first-name basis with the author, the opinionated writing makes it feel like a local is showing you around. It was always entertaining to figure out what Andrew meant by statements that were colorful but not crucial to understand ahead of time (e.g., "they want you" to take a certain road) or to compare our impressions of restaurant service. Our favorite experience with the book was reading about West Shore nightlife right after spending a few minutes fascinated upon the EXACT thing mentioned on p. 230. Be aware that many roads and turn-outs on Kauai are not marked so turn/pull over if you think you *might* be there, because it's easier to get back on the road than turn over. Also, as emphasized in the book, be sure you have the right equipment to enjoy yourself (reef shoes, insect repellent, snorkeling gear that fits). I didn't feel that this edition of the book inappropriately encourages dangerous behavior or trespassing. We're also San Francisco foodies and felt the restaurant reviews were accurate relative to what is available.

Now in an updated sixth edition, The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed is an advertising-free, in-depth guide to the "Garden Island" of Hawaii. Packed with full-color photography throughout, The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook covers the top sights, popular activities from golfing to parasailing, skydiving, snorkeling, whale watching and more, and recommendations on where to dine and where to stay. Maps, testimonies from firsthand experience, safety tips and an index for easy reference round out this enthusiastically recommended guide for anyone seeking to get the most out of a visit to sunny Kauai.

This book was worth every penny and more. If you are going to Kauai, this is a MUST. I paged through it for the most part before I went on my vacation, and marked a few spots that I knew I'd want to look into further once I actually got there. They couldn't have been more dead on about every little thing - from the roosters, to the beaches, even the restaurant reviews were accurate. I have to be honest and say that we planned most of our time there, based on the book's recommendations, and NOT the recommendations of any of the literature we got once we arrived - and that's including what the time share folk told us. GET THIS BOOK - you will enjoy your vacation that much more because of it!

We have been to Kauai several times. We first used his books for our first trip to to the big island and we were very pleased. We are returning to Kauai next month with friends and have purchased two copies for the trip. I agree with almost everything he says, it is the truth. We are looking forward to discovering things that we may have overlooked during our past visits.

This guidebook was great at telling us about beaches and activities. It was not great with the restaurant reviews. Granted, we are foodies from San Francisco who are accustomed to spending money on food, however we were continually disappointted by this guide. From rating a restaurant as excellent that served corned beef hash from a can to saying that proportions were skimpy at a place where we ended up sharing an entre due to the volume of food - this guide was constantly off. It became a joke, as to how bad the food and service would be versus how the guide rated it.

That said, it was great in getting us to secluded beaches and guiding us on kayak rentals.
