| The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban's backyard Anyone who despairs of the individual's power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan's treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schoolsespecially for girlsthat offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortenson's quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit. Author: Guest As a product of the Viet Nam era I frequently look at the world with a cynical eye, and as a consequence, I have few heroes. This author has become one of those few people I consider to be a hero. This year I had the considerable pleasure of spending a day getting to know Greg Mortenson and of reading "Three Cups of Tea."
The book is excellent. It is both a pleasure to read as a true life adventure story and as a remarkable look inside the Muslim world that very few people can provide.
Beyond that, the work Greg has done in Pakistan and Afghanistan stands as a monument to the good that one individual can accomplish even in the midst of the chaos that is the Middle-East of today. He reminds us of the value of all humans and of the dignity of human life.
Greg lives the parable of teaching a man to fish rather than feeding a man for a meal through the schools he has built for the children in this bleeding part of the globe. It reminds us that the best "cure" for society's ills, including crime and terrorism, is an education and the positive outcomes associated with learning.
If the money spent by the military in Iraq were to be half as effective as the money spent by Greg and the Central Asia Institute the world would be devoid of terrorism by now.
I highly recommend the book, endorse the organization and revere the man.

Author: Guest Greg Mortenson is an unusual guy with many talents and has combined them in a very special way to make a real difference in the world. He represents his country in a magnificent way.
It is a wonderful adventure and an example of how peace, if it were a goal, might be spread through the world in an economic fashion. The mountains of Pakistan and it's fascinating people are brought to life. This is great reading and a terrific way to step out into the world without leaving home.
I have bought and recommended many copies of the book for many friends and my reading group has enjoyed it as well. This book is on my short list of required lifetime reading.

Author: Guest Prose skips all around and shows the subject person (hero) to be someone who does not stay on point in his quest. He leaves various portions of his life in disarray and to fend for themselves as he leapfrogs from one to another and back again. He is shown as someone who probably has good intentions but leaves it to others to remedy his carelessness and inattention to his quest. Helping to build schools for the children is a worthy quest but he seems to follow a path of changing tangential interests and finds it hard to stay on task. He does not seem to learn profitably from the consequences of his lapses of attention to goal throughout the pages of the book. The book itself is poorly organized and could use more rewrites. Without the cheerleader/hero's occasional reappearances to put out one fire or another, will the one-time beneficiaries of the schools find themselves bereft of the benefits again? Will the whole process be dumped as the hero abandons his current effort and goes off on another tangent?

Author: Guest I LOVED this book. There are books that come along now and then that haunt you. This was one of those. I have given it and recommended it to everyone I know. What a contribution Greg has made and as far as I know is the only one who realizes the Madrasas problem and is trying to do something about it. God bless him.

Author: Guest Greg Mortenson sets an example for every American to admire. He personally makes a positive difference in America's foreign policy, something very few of our citizens can achieve. The book is well written and enjoyable from cover to cover. I highly recommend it. --By Paul D. Cohn, Author, 'Sao Tome.'
