| War is hell, but if you prepare properly for war, there's not much about life that will take you by surprise. At least, that's the premise of Unleashing the Warrior Within, in which author Richard Machowicz takes the lessons he learned as a Navy SEAL and applies them to real-life situations. For example, in war you learn that there are three dynamic elements of combat: target, weapons, and movement. The target dictates the weapons, and the weapons dictate movement. In real life, your target is what you want; your weapons are your skills; and movement is whatever you need to get in position to use your skills. But, since deciding upon a target is the step that's most troubling to people, he adds another wartime analytical tool called the CARVER matrix. You lay out various targets you may have in life--a better job; getting in shape; buying a new house; and taking on a new business partner, say. Then you assess the criticality, accessibility, recognizability, and vulnerability of the target, plus its effect on your overall mission in life, and the potential return on your effort. Machowicz calls his philosophy Bukido, and when you take his classes in Los Angeles, you learn self-defense along with these life-improvement skills. In this book, the object is to get you to choose a mission that is closest and most important to you, and then achieve your goals with military precision. By the time you're through learning the seven principles of combat, what you've really learned is how to think critically and focus your efforts. Machowicz uses his students as examples of how the enemy in life is really a lack of action, allowing life to take you along for a ride. So if your current target is a solid self-improvement course, Unleashing the Warrior Within could be your most effective weapon. --Lou Schuler Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Author: Guest Richard J. Machowicz is, as a SEAL should be, right on target. Unleashing the Warrior Within will teach you how to overcome the obstacles and reach your goals. One of the best books on self-motivation I've read.

Author: Guest Here's why I liked this book:
1. This was one of the most practical books that I've read when it comes to prioritizing and reaching goals. I think this is because, and is implied by the author's examples, SEALs can't afford to act on hypothetical ideas.
2. A bonus that was immensely valuable to me was the explanation of techniques to overcome fear.
3. The author provides acronyms for many of his techniques, so they can be easily remembered and used on the spot.
4. The book was easy to read. The examples that the author provided were both instructive and entertaining.
If I had to create a list of my Top Ten Favorite Books, this book would be on it.

Author: Guest To be honest, I actively avoided this book when looking for ways to get over my procrastination.
The cover depicted a muscular scowling sawed-off runt. On the back jacket this same runt assured me he would bring his years of experience as a Navy SEAL to bear on my procrastination problem. Since the SEALs are made up of half a dozen of every thousand who apply, I assumed that this runt was an exceptional human being who was going share his own unique life experiences and then exhort me to just go ahead and "Do as I do (, you maggot)!" I feared his "self help" book would really be just a memoir that would leave me without a clue how I might pry myself off the couch.
A friend whom I'd noticed had steadily improved his self-discipline over the last year handed me his copy of the book. Reluctantly, I began to read.
Richard J. Machowicz has a surprisingly clear and vivid writing style. He deftly turns brief stories of his life into usable ways to assess and prioritize any task before you. Little boxes summarize his techniques. He provides sample questions to ask yourself. He shows you with utter clarity and economy of words how you can determine for yourself what goals are worth your time and energy to pursue. He gives you ways to recognize and push through fears that hold you back. He shows ways to stack the odds in your favor to achieve your goals. He provides easy to remember acronyms like CARVER and ADVANTAGES to help you stay on track while assessing and accomplishing your goals. And, between the techniques, he tells some pretty rip-snortin' good stories.
Frankly, I'm guilty of misjudging a book by its cover. The author is indeed an exceptional human being who has both the wisdom and the words to inspire each of us to reach further than we ever thought possible. It's money well spent.

Author: Guest One of the greatest deceptions in life is to believe that we understand more than we really do...especially as we gain more & more experience in life. With that experience, we tend to view our current situations through the 'lens' of our past experiences, which is ok to a point. We must always be ready to toss our 'past experience lens'' if they do not apply to today and what we are expriencing now.
I say all of this to express the point that I re-read this book once a year. There are thoughts, concepts and stories in here which will awaken areas of your thinking that may have shifted in status quo.
The content is definitely not stuff your Mom would have taught you, but if you are willing to look long and hard at your life and seriously embrace some new ideas into your world view, I can say that this book will be worth your time & efforts.

Author: Guest While the material for this book has been gleaned from the author's years of intense military training, the lessons that he has taken away are equally applicable in daily life and don't have a militant tone to them. Machowicz understands that we aren't all Navy Seals but that all of us can use help making ourselves more effective in day-to-day life. This book accomplishes exactly that. Highly recommended for anyone who is looking for more out of life and is willing to exert some energy to get it.
