| Their last album may have given them a certifiable radio hit, airtime on VH1, and a Kidz Bop tribute, but listening to the follow-up to 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News, you might get the sense that the members of Modest Mouse are flinching at the spotlight. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the group's fifth full-length release, is denser than its predecessor with tunes that seem willfully harder to penetrate. Even the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the line-up seems incidental, as Modest Mouse's off-kilter sound stays largely intact. But keep listening and it becomes obvious that the band hasn't lost any of his pop bite, especially midway through with a sweep of terrific songs like "Missed the Boat," "Education" and "Little Motel." It's hard to tell if there's another "Float On" in the bunch. In fact, the first single, "Dashboard," is one of the weakest Isaac Brock has ever penned. With Shins James Mercer adding lovely vocals to "Florida," however, it hardly matters. --Aidin Vaziri Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. I am 48 years old..gives me great hope for the future of listenable and interesting rock music. Please Give It A Try...THE BEST ROCK ALBUM OF THE YEAR..(SO FAR!!)......(but what do i know) :)

Author: Guest This album is great fun and has been stuck in my head since I bought it. I read many reviews of people complaining about their different sound but if you want to listen to Long Drive or Lonesome Crowded West, then put those on and listen to them. Frankly I'd get bored with a band who made every album sound the same. This isn't cookie cutter music. Each album changes as life changes. If their sound didn't change, then it would be contrived and people would complain that they aren't being progessive enough. It's just another step from Good News and I like it a bit better. Fire it Up is very catchy, while Parting of the Sensory and Little Motel are moody. Missed the Boat is also a favorite. I love the lyrics. So true... as they always have been.

Author: Guest What in tarnation is this?
Why do all these new bands gotta play this "Theater Music?"
What happened to rock and roll? And life?
The Lonsome Crowded West. I can deal with that and have dealt with it for many years. It's pretty sweet. But it is still Modest Mouse. And that old Modest Mouse sound. Hey. Here we are, we're Modest Mouse.
I skipped the last album...too much to do, but hoped this one might have been fresher. It sounds like Franz Fredinand. And that is palin awful.
Do all of these bands like Franz, Mouse, Arcade Fire all get togeather and decide to make the worst music ever made?
Hey. Let's all be the worst.
Well they deifnetly have made an awful album and if that's what they were up to. My hats are off to them.
Have fun cathing them on tour. Don't bring a date. Because they will just get angry and think you are a big jerk. Why did you subject me to this?

Author: Guest I've been into alternative music for as long as I could buy records... which is a long time! I just don't see the appeal of Modest Mouse. I can accept challenging music but this stuff is just annoying. I thought maybe the addition of Johnny Marr would give these guys a listenable sound...wrong! It's simply not enjoyable music. And I don't mean upbeat and happy. I just mean it's like going to a nice restaurant and having some annoying little kid screaming through your entire dinner. Fortunately, I didn't pay for this meal and I'm gonna smack that kid on my way out!
