| Pregnancy should be a time of wonder and hope, but these days, it's associated more often with paranoia. Dr. Glade Curtis is keenly aware of the anxieties heaped upon expectant women: he has written several pregnancy-related books. So while he covers pretty much any topic that an expectant mom might be concerned about, he does not overload the reader with extraneous information or horror stories that can be found in that other best-selling pregnancy guide. In this completely revised and updated edition, Curtis describes the physical developments from weeks 1 through 40--or 41 or 42!--such as the size and weight of the baby, emotional changes in the mother, typical medical tests offered, and nutritional requirements. (The iron found in prenatal vitamins may exacerbate morning sickness, he writes, because iron supplementation is usually not needed until the final trimester.) It is too bad that Dr. Curtis does not recommend more alternative-medicine approaches for treating common pregnancy discomforts. In the chapter covering Week 8, he rightly describes sciatic-nerve pain as excruciating, but does not advise yoga or chiropractic treatments for its relief. However, he *is* hip to the use of doulas, or labor coaches, he encourages breastfeeding, and includes numerous tips for making your partner feel included in what should be a thrilling experience for you both. --Erica Jorgensen Editorial Descriptions are usually submitted by the manufacturers, publishers and authors. Author: Guest If this 5th edition says the same things the 4th edition did, there are lies in this book, plain and simple. It's a good thing I called my doctor right away when I had bleeding at 5 weeks, because according to this book there was nothing they were going to be able to do for me and my baby was going to die. As quoted from the week 8 chapter: "No procedures or medication can keep a woman from miscarrying." I was given progesterone 3xs a day for my entire first trimester and my 16 week in-utero baby wouldn't be here right now if it wasn't for that, and he's doing just fine now. This book left me seething - if I had followed their information, I would have stayed home and let nature take it's course and be mourning what could have been instead of being excited about this new life. The other information in this book is good, but you can get that elsewhere without the added fear interlaced. First-time moms, do yourself a favor and buy any other book!

Author: Guest This book is somewhat educational, but borders pyschotic.
Case-and-point:
After suffering from a headache for longer than three hours, I referenced my pregnancy books. The majority of the books (with the expection of the book in question) suggested that headaches are a normal symptom of pregnancy in most women. Contact your doctor if the headache presists for an extended period of time, chronically returned and is accompanied by one of the following....blah..blah..blah.
"Your Pregnancy Week by Week" does not take a mild-mannered approached to such symptoms as headaches. Instead, dives into PreEclampsia. Suggesting that headache is an indicator of this problem. (Which, yes it is. But one should note that PreExlampsia affects only 5% of pregnant women.)
The book is a well-organized hypochondriacs guide and should be burned.
If you crave a simplistic guide that provides you with an organized (prehaps timelined) approach to understanding your pregnancy, read "What to Expect."
If you prefer to contact your doctor daily with crazy questions like, "if my husband smoked pot in his youth, will this affect my pregnancy some ten years late?" THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. (Yes, this book does suggest that a father who has smoked pot, casually or chronically, is twice as likely to spawn a child that dies of SIDS.)

Author: Guest I really like this book. IT gives you what's going on inside of your body and how your fetus is changing little by little.
Yes there is some serious medical information. I'm in the medical field and deal with women during their pregnancies, as well as their embryo's, fetuses, infants, and children. So, maybe I have a different view of pregnancy and the medical side of it. I would rather be well informed of everything. Postivie or negative. You can't walk around with your head buried in the sand. Ignorance is bliss.
As anything, you can't use it as your only reference. BUT I found it interesting and educational. I've gone back to it w/ each one of my pregnancies.

Author: Guest Im in the second trimester of my first pregnancy and this book has done nothing but given me excellent information. Sure there are sections in there about what cold go wrong. Wouldnt you rather know about these possible complications up front than to not know what could happen at all? Those of you who are complaining about all the "negative information" need to realize that pregnancy is indeed a beautiful blessing but not all pregnancies are smooth sailing with no complications. The Dr. who wrote this book is just listing POSSIBLE complications, most of which have a slim chance of happening to most healthy women. So give the Doc a break people!!!!
